Breakdown

CALEB
young, white, Jewish, defected confederate captain, entitled. The only son of a slave­holding father. Returns home injured after the war. The only life he's known is that of white entitlement and doesn't understand how being on the losing side of the war will affect him. Secretive and cautious. John's half-brother.

JOHN
young, black/white mixed race, bursting with dreams. Has an edge, a fire in him. He is a recently freed slave who was educated by his owners. Reared Jewish but practices his religion for survival more than faith. Angry and rebellious toward his former owners and whites. Prepared to do anything necessary to live and build a new, free life. Caleb's half­brother. Has to be able to sing Go Down Moses.
