BREAKDOWN

THE SCENARIOS

SYNOPSIS: Angie, an actor, has just landed her weirdest gig yet: improvising scenes with active-duty cops, helping to train them to respond to people in acute mental crisis. But when the backstage tensions and workplace hijinks begin to pull focus from the training’s actual goal — to save lives — Angie tries making things a little more real. Funny and compassionate, this world premiere looks at the intricacies of empathy and asks what it costs to pretend to be someone else.

SEEKING:

[ANGIE] She/Her. Mid 20s-Late 30s, Black. An out-of-work actor who’s had a moderate amount of success in recent years until work dried up. Guarded, whip-smart, and very talented. Also: tired. Angie notices everything and is able to smirk at some of the absurdity of the world around her, though her moral compass is strong. Very much used to being in spaces that make her uncomfortable.

[NED] He/Him. 50s-60s, White. An actor who’s struggled to get parts for years, stringing together a career — such as it is — with showcase parts and the very, very occasional under-5 on procedurals. Now he’s finally been able to cobble together a living acting in police crisis intervention trainings, and he's finally been able to quit his job. A tinge of burnout, but tries not to let it show. Defaults to aggrieved, but trying, constantly, to not say the wrong thing. Often says the wrong thing.

[SASHA] She/Her. Late 20s-Late 30s, White. A veteran cop. Dry, tough, and not at all interested in wasting a second of her time. Though she has a hard exterior, she also is able to access her vulnerability. Grew up working class. She’s swallowed every bit of indignity and rage from the past eleven years in order to stay in control. She is good at her job and is a bit by-the-book.
