CAROLE KING: Female; Character ages 18-30 – She is an aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny, and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good-natured, unassuming, and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music. Ability to play piano a plus. Vocal range: Eb3-Eb5
GERRY GOFFIN: Male; Character ages 18-30 – Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. Vocal range: B3-D5
CYNTHIA WEIL: Female; Character ages 18-30 - She is a songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart and chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likable. Vocal range: G3-E5
BARRY MANN: Male; Character ages 18-30 - A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good-natured, appealing and neurotic. Ambitious, but likable. Vocal range: Bb2-C5
GENIE KLEIN: Female, Jewish, 40-50 - Carole’s mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life and her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes. Vocal range: B3-E5
DON KIRSHNER: Male; 40-60 - An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast-talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct and sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker. Vocal range: A2-C#4
Director: Lisa K Bryant
1st Rehearsal: June 27, 2025
Opening: July 24, 2025
Closing: August 23, 2025
NOTE: All roles are physically demanding and require excellent comedic timing. British accent and American accent.
CHRIS: Male, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. High status clown. Rigid, uptight, everything really matters. He is the director of the show, and this is the biggest day of his life. Everything is riding on this. It is a nerve-wracking and exciting night. His pain is evident and every time someone laughs the pain deepens. He has equal amounts of contempt for his fellow actors & the audience watching the play. RP ACCENT.
JONATHAN: Male, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. A bit bland but sees himself as a James Bond type. Excited and having fun, but not naïve. He technically has to drive the show. He cares about the play, but not to the same extent as the others. Very physical role. RP ACCENT.
ROBERT: Male, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. Wants to be Richard Burton, as evidenced by his declamatory style. He is, however, not a parody of a bad actor. He is unaware of others around him. He does not feel badly when things go wrong and never learns from his mistakes. There is a power struggle between Robert and Chris to be president of the Cornley Poly Drama Society (a position that matters a great deal to Robert). Has real vocal power. RP ACCENT.
DENNIS: Male, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. He has no real desire to be involved in the theatre, he just wants to make friends (of which he has none). He believes if he does well in the show, he will be more successful socially. Laughter from the audience is agony for him. He may be slightly oblivious but understands when he gets things wrong. The laughter is a personal tragedy/failure. RP ACCENT.
SANDRA: Female, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. She is vain and possesses a huge ego. Wants to be loved. Has ambitions to go to Hollywood and will hurt anyone standing in the way of what she wants but is smart enough to stay on the good side of someone who can help her (like the director). You know the type. The stakes are high for her. Very physical role. RP ACCENT.
MAX: Male, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. He has never been on stage before. He learned his lines and does exactly what he's told to do. He has zero connection with any of the other actors, but when he gets a laugh, he breaks the 4th wall and engages with the audience. Childlike and naïve. His mistakes are fundamental. He doesn't think anything through, just looks for approval. RP ACCENT.
TREVOR: Male, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. The play’s lighting and sound operator. He simply wants to get on with the show. Curmudgeonly and doesn’t care for actors. He is easily distracted and does many things he shouldn’t, including engaging with the audience. When things go really sideways, he is forced to act in the play. He hates acting. STANDARD AMERICAN ACCENT.
ANNIE: Female, 25 - 35, any ethnicity. The stage manager. She has the biggest journey of any of the characters. When Sandra is indisposed Annie, who cannot bear to be on stage, must step in. Initially terrified by acting, she is willing to kill for it by the end of the play. Her initial terror turns to joy, and then to fury. She starts small but grows and grows. STANDARD AMERICAN ACCENT.
Director: Reggie Law
1st Rehearsal: August 15, 2025
Opening: September 5, 2025
Closing: September 28, 2025
NOTE: Comfort with accents is integral.
HERCULE POIROT - The Inspector: Male; 50s-60s. Passport from: Belgium. Occupation: Detective. Meticulous and exacting, Poirot is a keen observer of detail and an astute judge of character. Certain that the crime was committed by someone on the train, he confidently and patiently works his way to a shocking solution.
SAMUEL RATCHETT (Bruno Cassetti-The Victim) and COLONEL ARBUTHNOT: Male; mid-30s.
RATCHETT: Passport from: The United States. A brusque, middle-aged American businessman: unforgiving, with a threatening demeanor and a whiplash of a voice. He’s made plenty of enemies... almost everyone has wished him dead. ARBUTHNOT: Passport from: Scotland. Occupation: Colonel. A Scotsman, Arbuthnot is handsome and very matter-of-fact. He’s hopelessly in love with Mary. Would he kill for her?
COUNTESS ELÉNA ANDRENYI: Female; late 20s-30s. Passport from: Hungary. Occupation: Royalty. Countess Eléna Andrenyi is out of a fairy tale. She’s in her twenties, brilliantly beautiful and always dressed to the nines in furs and diamonds. She seems too good to be true — but is she a murderer?
MONSIEUR BOUC: Male, 40-50. Passport from: Belgium. Occupation: Gentleman. A young middle-aged man of good humor, Monsieur Bouc is an old friend of Poirot’s. He appears removed from the crime, often acting as Poirot’s sounding board, but no one on the train is above suspicion.
MARY DEBENHAM: Female; late 20s. Passport from: England. Occupation: Governess. An English beauty, Mary bears a certain sadness in her eyes. When she first appears, she is very anxious. Perhaps she is harboring a terrible secret.
PRINCESS NATALYA DRAGOMIROFF: Female; 60s-70s. Passport from: Russia. Occupation: Royalty. The Russian princess enters her compartment “like a galleon in full sail.” Expensively dressed and handsomely bejeweled, she certainly wouldn’t need to kill for money. But might she have another motive?
MICHEL and HEAD WAITER: Male; 40s-50.
MICHEL: Passport from: France. Occupation: Train Conductor. A good-looking Frenchman, Michel has a quiet, almost grave sense of humor. He’s seen a lot in his years on the Orient Express, and he knows his way around the train, making him particularly well positioned to get away with murder. HEAD WAITER: Occupation: Head Waiter on the Orient Express. Professional in demeanor, he is knowledgeable and a bit overconfident. Mystery fans know it’s a cliché, but never rule out the possibility that The Butler Did It.
HELEN HUBBARD: Female: 50s. Passport from: The United States. Occupation: Widow. An outspoken American, well dressed with a touch of flamboyance, Mrs. Hubbard is a tough-talking broad with a rough edge and a bold sense of humor. She seems the least likely to commit murder, but is there something about her the others don’t know?
HECTOR MacQUEEN: Male; 30s. Passport from: The United States. Occupation: Personal secretary and translator. A nervous young American in his thirties with a strained, rather beleaguered face, Hector appears to be suppressing something. Perhaps he knows more than he is willing to tell.
GRETA OHLSSON: Female; 30s-50s. Passport from: Sweden. Occupation: Nurse and missionary. Plain and modest, Greta has a frightened, sheep-like quality about her. There is something odd about this woman. Could she be harboring a deadly secret?
