BREAKDOWN
SETTING: Once upon a time in a small Brazilian village along the Amazon River
NOTE: Would be great if talent speaks Portuguese, but not necessary.
HELENA - Female Latina, Brazilian/Afro-Latina, 20-29. Helena is a smart, dutiful and possessing a discerning nature with a strong BS-detector. A natural beauty unaware and/or uninterested in good looks . Mistrusts lavish personality displays that reek of arrogance. Fearful of intense emotions. An old, wounded soul with depths of passion, pain and sensitivity masked by a hard-working, tough exterior and “older sister” identity.
BELMIRA - Female, Latina/Brazilian/Afro-Latina, 20-29. Beautiful, frivolous and a bit vain, but charming and adored by all. A skilled but youthful tactician she is capable of getting everything she wants by sheer will and charisma. Unaware of how her actions impact others. Has never known emotional pain, loss or defeat. Possesses a thirst for adventure that will never be satiated by life in her quaint village. Aches to see the world beyond the river, even if it requires hurting those closest to her.
MOISES - Male, Latino, Brazilian/Afro-Latino, 25-30. Tall, charming, handsome and mysterious. A stranger with a seductive, soothing presence. Earnest and sympathetic, he’s secretly looking for a true love to end his days of loneliness and despair. Dressed like a man of property, but possessing useful working skills beneficial to the village. He enjoys the rapport with the locals but sets his eyes on Helena and pursues her with wild, but cautious, abandon – as if his life depended on it.
DUARTE - Male, Latino, Brazilian/Afro-Latino, 25-30. A hard-working and honorable man. His restrained and quiet nature hides a deep emotional reservoir that is stirred by the presence of the stranger. Forced to confront the raw and uncomfortable emotions jealousy, possessiveness and hate born—ironically—from the life choices he’s made out of duty to family and village.
SR. COSTA – Male, Latino, Brazilian/Afro-Latino, late 40s-mid 50s. He is BELMIRA and HELENA’s father. A fisherman. Possessing a joy of life and a profound understanding of human nature that serves as an inspiration to the younger men. Passionately and blessedly in love with the love of his life – his wife. Forever young. Forever living the dream of love.
SRA. COSTA – Female, Brazilian/Afro-Latina, late 40s-mid 50s. She is BELMIRA and HELENA’s mother. A strong, willful and loving mentor to her daughters. Encourages her daughters to live life on their own terms by cultivating love – and transcending fear of the unknown. Fiercely and blessedly in love with her husband. Forever thankful for the power of love. And always ready to speak about it.
