THE OUTSIDERS - Developmental Agreement

THE OUTSIDERS - EQUITY VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

Tulsa 1967, LLC

CONTRACT

Development Agreement $575 weekly minimum

SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in the work session of THE OUTSIDERS (see breakdown).

THE OUTSIDERS is a story about class, broken homes, protecting one’s turf, and the all-too-real American condition known as the “Haves and Have Nots.” It is a world of kids of every sort, from destitute outlaws, gas station workers, and high school dropouts (the Greasers), to the very well-appointed, college-bound, and wealthy (the Socs). This is Tulsa 1967, where to be a Soc means to be rich and white. To be a Greaser is to be poor, rejected by the Haves because of any number of facets: economic status, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity and any other facet that Tulsa Soc Society deems as other. The Greasers are a group of boys who have created a chosen family that reflects the true diversity of Tulsa.

BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please prepare a VIDEO of a song of your choice from the show at https://tinyurl.com/OutsidersEquityMaterial OR a brief country, soul, rock or folk song that shows range with accompaniment. Please send one link and slate with your name and the material you’ll be singing. Film your audition from your waist up in front of a clean background, with no backlighting with as much limit ambient noise as possible.

* The sound of The Outsiders is a blend of folk, soul, southern rock, blues, with some elements of early country, hints of bluegrass and church revival. This is not a twangy score, no strong accents needed, not a hoedown or a hootenanny, but more of a celebration of Americana, traditions around acoustically driven, sincere, soulful, visceral human expression. Authenticity is key, as this should not feel like something put on, but the truest expression of these characters' emotional lives. For these reasons, we are interested in unique and eclectic voices to comprise our company. For some stylistic references, here is a playlist featuring artists such as Bonnie Raitt, The Band, Bill Withers, and more.

SEEKING:

Ponyboy Curtis- 15. A dreamer with a cowboy spirit. Our narrator. The youngest Greaser and youngest brother of three. Curious, introspective, a storyteller. Freshly orphaned. Idolizes Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and everything that character stands for. A natural loner, he finds true friendship with Johnny Cade.

Johnny Cade- 16, but looks younger. Ponyboy’s best friend, the smallest and most vulnerable of the Greasers. Sensitive and loyal, suffers from PTSD from abuse at home and on the streets, he has found family in the Greasers. Has a special connection with Dallas Winston, outsiders among outsiders.

Sherry “Cherry” Valance- 17, A dreamer. Brave, bold, confident, curious. Has been conditioned to be what society expects her to be: Bob's Girlfriend and Captain of the Cheerleading team. Experiences an awakening once she meets Ponyboy and the other Greasers. Falls in love with Dallas Winston. Displays tremendous compassion for the Greasers and Ponyboy in particular. Breaks the mold.

Dallas “Dally” Winston- 19, wily, rebellious, audacious. Sensual and single minded. The outlier of the Greasers, originally from New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. A drifter and a lone wolf. Falls for Cherry despite himself. Deeply protective of Johnny Cade, sees him as a little brother.

Darrell Darry Curtis- 20, the oldest Curtis brother. A former golden boy, intelligent and athletic, his future was ripped away from him. Now works a job (roofing) and has taken on the difficult task of raising and providing for his two younger brothers following their parents’ tragic death. Hardworking, stern and protective, he had to grow up too fast. Sacrificed his future to give his brothers one.

Sodapop Curtis- 17, the middle Curtis brother. Charismatic, exceptionally handsome, and a high-school drop-out, he now works at the local gas station. Ponyboy's security blanket at home. Privately nursing a broken heart but hides it well and deflects so he doesn't have to take anything too seriously.

Keith Two-Bit Matthews- 18, a natural clown with an infectious sense of humor, extremely loyal to the Greasers and to the Curtis family. Starts to fall for Marcia, one of the soc girls.

Bob- 17/18, the leader of the Soc’s, clean-cut, aggressive, cocky, a bully. Cherry's boyfriend and the captain of the football team. Can turn on the charm when it serves him. Comes from extreme privilege, he doesn't take no for an answer.

Randy- 18, Bob’s second in command. Preppy, clean-cut, conflicted, a follower. Begins to question the social order and the constant violence of the gang wars in Tulsa.

Paul - 20, Another one of Bob’s friends and a higher up in the Soc chain-of-command. Former top dog. A one-time football teammate of Darrell, he got to have the future Darry dreamed of.

Marcia- 17, Cherry’s best friend and a soc. One of the popular girls at school, she has a great sense of humor and starts to take an interest in Two-Bit, crossing the invisible lines drawn by society.

Sheila McCrory- 30s-40s, Black: A social worker in Tulsa, she has been assigned to the Curtis' boys after their parents' brutal deaths in a car accident. Compassionate, honest, determined, she doesn't pull punches and leads with tough love. She helps guide the Curtis boys through the challenges they face in the wake of their parents’ death.
