BRIGHT STAR: Prepare a brief folk, country, pop or bluegrass song. The singing in BRIGHT STAR is in the folk and bluegrass style and calls for strong, natural sounding voices. (there is no “big Broadway” or pop “power belting” in this show)
From award-winning screenwriter and playwright Steve Martin (Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Roxanne) and chart-topping singer-songwriter Edie Brickell comes a world premiere American musical inspired by their Grammy Award-winning collaboration “Love Has Come For You.” Bright Star features 25 new songs and tells a beguiling tale that unfolds in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1923 and 1945. Billy Cane, a young soldier just home from World War II, meets Alice Murphy, the brilliant editor of a southern literary journal. Together they discover a powerful secret that alters their lives. Tony Award-winning director Walter Bobbie (Broadway’s Chicago) makes his Globe debut with this entertaining musical of enduring love, family ties, and the light of forgiveness that shines from a bright star.

ALICE MURPHY:
Caucasian female; mid-late 30’s. Will play ALICE at age 38-an editor of a southern literary magazine. Intelligent, attractive, professional-but with an air of melancholy (The same actress will also play YOUNG ALICE at age 16- Rebellious, high spirited, sexually forward, adventurous-looking to break out of small town life and experience the world). Must be very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles.

Caucasian Male; Early-mid 30's. Will play JIMMY RAY in his early 20’s-Mayor Dobbs’ son and young Alice’s beau; Handsome, boyishly charming, well built; is being positioned by his father into a position of wealth and power. Unlike his father, he has a sense of personal responsibility and morality. (The same actor will also play an adult JIMMY RAY at age 40)
MARGO CRAWFORD:
Caucasian Female; 22; Runs a small town bookstore-a childhood friend of Billy’s who now harbors romantic feelings. Sweet natured, genuine, wholesome, pretty. An intelligent, but vulnerable, girl next door

Everyone’s favorite green meanie will return for his 17th consecutive year in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the heartwarming musical based on the classic book and animated film. James Vásquez returns to direct this beloved San Diego holiday tradition.
Roles will be understudied. Available roles:
The Grinch. Male, 30s-50s. A beastly, charming curmudgeon. Scary but with a heart underneath his gruff exterior. Has the size and presence of a Music Hall superstar with deft athleticism. A triple threat. Needs a strong, booming baritone singing voice with falsetto. (THERE IS AN OFFER OUT ON THIS ROLE)

In a Soviet prison in 1952, Stalin’s secret police have rounded up 26 writers, the giants of Yiddish literature in Russia. Baffled by his arrest, he and his cellmates wonder at what has brought them together and wrestle with what it means to write in troubled times. Time Out New York called The Twenty-Seventh Man “exquisite – as chilling and haunted as a ghost story.” Artistic Director Barry Edelstein returns to the play he premiered in New York by award-winning novelist Nathan Englander and reimagines it for the Globe’s intimate in-the-round space, bringing us larger-than-life personalities and an unforgettable reminder of the transcendent power of storytelling.

One of the true geniuses of the American theatre makes her long-awaited San Diego debut with The White Snake! Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman creates an enchanting theatrical spectacle with live music and sumptuous visuals. In this visionary staging of a classic Chinese fable, a gentle serpent transforms into a beautiful woman. She falls in love with a dashing young man and decides to stay human forever, until a wicked monk discovers her true identity and vows to destroy her. The White Snake is an unforgettable theatrical event for all ages that NPR called “strikingly beautiful.” The New York Times proclaimed that Zimmerman “creates richly imagistic works – her eye refines and refinishes, drawing ever-sharper pictures from the texts she theatricalizes.”

20s to 30s. Asian, South Asian or other ethnicity. Xu Xian is an innocent; meek, humble, earnest and loving. He is a hero, but more of a Frodo or Sam type of hero; comic and a bit of a fool. Guileless and maybe even a bit naïve. He looks for the good in the world and in everyone.
Fa Hai / Ensemble
30s – 60s. Asian, South Asian or other ethnicity. An evil monk. A villain. He is rigid and righteous in his faith. Though not a requirement, we are looking for actors who are bald or are willing to shave their heads.
Brother-in-Law / Ensemble
30s – 40s. Asian, South Asian or other ethnicity. The Brother-in-law is a hard man. A realist; practical and unforgiving. A character actor who will play multiple roles and deliver much of the narrative storytelling. Looking for actors who have a poetic touch with language. Actor must also sing well.
Master Liang / Ensemble
40s – 60s. Asian, South Asian or other ethnicity. An older, sweet and good energy; soulful and comic. A character actor who will play multiple roles and deliver much of the narrative storytelling. Looking for actors who handle narrative language well and exude calmness and intelligence.

20s – 30s. Asian, South Asian or other ethnicity. Actors will play multiple roles. Looking for vibrant and creative actors who are detailed in their character work.

Out-of-work actor Alex More can’t pass up the oddest of odd jobs—an offer to play shopkeeper for one tough customer who doesn’t let anyone rain on her parade. Soon it begins to take a toll on his patience, his love life, and his view of people (who need people). Jonathan Tolins’s “totally fictional” Off Broadway hit will have you rolling in the aisles and realizing why The New York Times called it “seriously funny – a remarkably sustained slice of absurdist whimsy,” and the New York Daily News proclaimed, “This play deserves a hearty ‘Hello, gorgeous!’ ”

Male 20s - 40s: An underemployed actor living in L.A., who gets hired to work in the shopping mall in Barbra Streisand's basement. Sweet, smart, funny, but a bit timid in his career, Alex enthusiastically tells the story of his employment and budding friendship with the diva, while also taking on the characters of Barbra, James Brolin, Alex's opinionated Jewish boyfriend Barry, and Barbra's officious house manager Sharon.

Arms and the Man, one of the wittiest and most charming plays of the English stage, mixes smarts and silliness in a wonderfully entertaining tale of love and war.

Captain Bluntschli:
Male. 30s-40s. A professional soldier from Switzerland who is serving in the Serbian army. He is thirty-four years old, and he is totally realistic about the stupidity of war.
Raina Petkoff:
Female. Early 20s. The romantic idealist of twenty-three who views war in terms of noble and heroic deeds.
Sergius Saranoff:
Male. 20s-40s. The extremely handsome young Bulgarian officer who leads an attack against the Serbs which was an overwhelming success.
Major Petkoff:
Male. 50s. The inept, fifty-year-old father of Raina; he is wealthy by Bulgarian standards, but he is also unread, uncouth, and incompetent.
Catherine Petkoff:
Female. 50s- 60s. Raina's mother; she looks like and acts like a peasant, but she wears fashionable dressing gowns and tea gowns all the time in an effort to appear to be a Viennese lady.
Louka:
Female. 20s-30s. The Petkoffs' female servant; she is young and physically attractive, and she uses her appearance for ambitious preferment.
Nicola:
Female. 30s-40s. A realistic, middle-aged servant who is very practical.
