BREAKDOWN
A rollicking farce by Pierre Corneille first performed in 1644. This hilarious play of mistaken identities and
fabrications illustrates the tangled web which lies and deceit create. Dorante, the dubious hero of the play is fond of exaggeration, and at worst, bald faced lies. His lies are almost his undoing, but love and truth win in the end. Delightful and funny, this play is a Restoration comedy, but very relevant today.
Dorante
(Late 20's/Early 30's) is the 17th Century “playboy”: witty, energetic, enthusiastic, inventive, and fearless in his lying.
Cliton
(25-35) is Dorante's trusty servant. He is in awe of Dorante's easy way with things, and is amazed at how he gets away with so much.
Clarice
(Mid 20's) is a young lady of Paris, from a wealthy family. Educated and beautiful, she too has a bit of the “live life to the fullest” philosophy.
Lucrèce
(Mid 20's) is Clarice's best friend. Also lovely, smart, and wealthy - but cautious and circumspect.
Sabine
(18-40) is Lucrece's servant. Smart and loyal, but with a bit of a mercenary streak.
Isabelle
(18-40) is Clarice's servant. Also smart and loyal, but a bit more of the romantic.
Géronte
(50-70): is Dorante's father, honorable, well meaning, a gentleman, and a bit befuddled by all the goings-on around him.
Alcippe
(Late 20's/Early 30's) is a wealthy, quick-tempered young man of Paris who is a close acquaintance of Dorante and the secret fiancé of Clarice
Philiste
(Late 20's/Early 30's) is Alcippe’s close friend and chief supporter.
