SEEKING

Actors for Magic Theatre's production of Jessica Hagedorn's The Gangster of Love, based on the novel of the same name. Actors of all ethnicities and types encouraged to apply. Strong preference for Bay Area actors. 6-7 M, 4-5 F.

PREPARATION

Actors should indicate roles of interest in email to schedule appointment. Will be sent appropriate sides. Actors with musical abilities should also be prepared to sing or play their instrument.

BREAKDOWN

The Gangster of Love: (please note, actors cast will play multiple roles)

THE TRICKSTER – Can morph into anyone and anything.

ROCKY RIVERA – around seventeen when the play starts. An artist finding her way and her voice. The leader of The Gangster of Love band, Filipina.

VOLTAIRE RIVERA – twenty-one when the play starts. Brother to Rocky, a gifted guitarist who has set fire to his guitar. Filipino.

MILAGROS FLORES RIVERA: 40s – beautiful, charismatic, formidable and stylish. Rocky and Voltaire’s mother.

MARLON RIVERA 40s – Rocky and Voltaire’s uncle; same age as Milagros. A former Hollywood actor, now gardener. Lives in L.A.

KEIKO VAN HELLER: early 20s – mixed race; originally from New York. An artist, passionate and eccentric.

JIMI HENDRIX/Dr. HENDRICKS: 27 years old.

ELVIS CHANG: 20s – lead guitarist, The Gangster Of Love; from Oakland.

BUGSY BUSTAMANTE:20s-30s – percussionist, from Oakland.

THE CARABAO KID – middle-aged, revered Filipino poet/activist/cultural icon; born and raised in San Francisco’s Western Addition.

FELY CRUZ – Milagros’ older sister; also a beauty, but less concerned with appearances. A skilled nurse, she has worked at various hospitals, including SF General.

BASILIO “BAS” CRUZ – Fely’s husband, a flashy insurance salesman with a shady past. Walks with a slight limp. Same age as Fely.

RICK FOSS: 40s – a banker. Slightly younger than Milagros.

ZEKE AKAMINE: 40s– landlord of Fell Street flat; originally from Hawaii. In his 40s. In love with Milagros.

HARRY FONG: Middle aged– butcher; smitten with Milagros; first-generation Chinese immigrant. Middle-aged.

BENNY AGMATA : 20s-30s– Filipino orderly at the Chinese Benevolent Hospital.

FATHER ROBERTO: Late 30s-40s – Latino poet & activist priest; grew up in the Mission.

SHIG MURAO: 40s – Japanese beatnik bookseller at City Lights Bookstore. I

NIKOS THE GREEK: Middle-aged – a dockworker poet who’s a regular at City Lights & Vesuvio’s.

SHY NAMELESS POET: Teenage-20 – young & humble Filipino male or female aspiring poet.
