Breakdown
**The roles of Jerry, Dave, Georgie, and Nathan have been cast.
Seeking actors with comedy chops that can hit the depths and heights of reality. The audience must connect with these real people and fall in love with them, quirks and all.
Monty Men: If you are auditioning for these roles, you need to be very comfortable with your body; enough to perform on stage in your underwear and eventually a g-string. You will not need to undress at auditions.
Monty Women: This show is not just about the guys. The women's roles are powerful, pivotal, and memorable. There is no heart without connection and the women are critical in creating the circle.
Dance: Unless the character breakdown specifically notes dance in the description all roles must move well, but do NOT need to dance or look like a dancer. In fact the more you move like regular people the better. Need to be coordinated. The ensemble men and women need to be able to learn basic ballroom and if you can execute that with flair, it’s a plus.
Malcolm MacGregor – Male, to play 30-40 yrs. old (High Tenor, smooth falsetto). Beautiful Tenor voice (will probably the most trained sounding voice of the leads). Still lives with his sickly wheelchair bound mother. A sensitive guy who longs for a place of his own someday. Unemployed mill worker who now works as the night security guard since the plant has closed. A shy gay man, he is rescued from a half-hearted suicide attempt by Jerry and Dave and becomes fast friends. Malcolm's self-esteem soars around his new companions.
Ethan Girard – Male, to play 25-40 yrs. old (High Bari-tenor) Ethan remains an optimist while struggling with unemployment and friendship. He energetically attempts wall-walking a la Donald O'Connor's 'Singing in the Rain’, his favorite movie. He is handsome, energetic, and eager to please. He moons the audience in Act 1. His affection for Malcolm is openly genuine and uncomplicated. Good physical comedic role.
Noah “Horse” T. Simmons – African-American Male, 50-60 yrs. old (Baritone). Retired mill worker. Excellent mover with great dead-pan comedy. Funny in a curmudgeon way. Comes alive in his number “Big Black Man” with some great funky moves.
Harold Nichols – Male, to play 45-60 yrs. old (High Baritone/Tenor). An unemployed mill supervisor. Harold's doting on his wife extends to the realm of covering up his unemployment for 6 months while keeping her in upper middle class luxury well past his means. Has a higher standard of living with even bigger debts to pay, which is motivation to become a part of the Monty 6. He is somewhat of a stuffed shirt cynic. Teaches the guys how to dance for the one night only Monty event. Must move the best of the leading men, as he is their choreographer.
Pam Lukowski – Female, to play 30-40 yrs. old (Mezzo-Soprano) Jerry’s estranged wife and Nathan’s mom. Pam has become a realist and she is doing what she feels is in the best interest of her son. She earnestly wants Jerry to be an active parent for Nathan, but wrestles with strong reservations about his character and her own lingering feelings for him. She is strong and willing to prohibit his custody rights if he can’t make his support payments. She can easily be unlikeable and be a villain, but we want someone that we love and can see her side of things. Should be a beautiful woman.
Vicki Nichols – Female, to play 30-55 yrs. old (High Alto/Mezzo belter). Harold's wife. Charming and energetic. Flamboyant on the surface, her love and understanding are real and she doesn’t care about all the material things as much as she does him, but he doesn’t feel worthy of her and understand that. She is always positive and upbeat. Classy but also a little sassy. Easily one of the girls. Owns the dance studio. Moves with elegance and easy. Has a fun cha-cha number “Life with Harold”. Comedic triple-threat. A beautiful woman that clearly should look out of his league. Could be a younger wife or his age. Her age doesn’t matter as much as her overall presence.
Jeanette Burmeister – Female to play 65-75 yrs old (Alto). A piano player of indeterminate years. Retired and living with her 8th husband. Has GREAT comedic timing. She's an old showbiz pro who has seen it all and been there before. You can't shock her, but she'll shock you as she says what's really on her mind! Steals the show with her 'Showbiz' number. She should stop the show. Would consider stars for this role, but really looking for someone with the right timing and sensibility.
Buddy 'Keno' Walsh * – Male, to play 21-35 yrs. old. A successful Chippendale stripper, comfortable and athletic with stripping down to a g-string. Has a great body; muscular, large build is preferred, but in shape enough to pass as a stripper is all that is required. Been in the business for some time and takes it seriously. Strong and confident gay man. Doesn’t take any crap from the “macho” guys. Must move very well. Will double in other roles. **More than likely will be the dance captain for the show.
Male Ensemble – Ages 20-50. Six additional roles will be cast from this group of men. All vocal ranges needed; We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Seeking ensemble with great voices who move well and are strong, great actors/smart performers. A few of them have some great comedic turns, so people that are great with comedy from a REAL place are preferred. Most of the men sing a variety of styles with considerable range. Tenors have to cover some mid-bari register stuff, but the strength of the show is in the high wailing and rock straight-toning (non-legit). We need good movers that are comfortable with their bodies. No dance training or experience in any particular style is required, but many characters need to perform synchronized movement well while singing tight harmonies. They all need to ballroom dance, but aside from that there are no large dance requirements for this show.
Female Ensemble – Ages 20-50. 4 additional roles will be cast from this group of women. All vocal ranges needed; The women all sing in a moderate Mezzo/Belt range and strong mixes. We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Seeking ensemble with great voices who move well and are strong, great actors/smart performers.
