PREPARATION
Actors should prepare an excerpt from the script and the two songs, “No One Knows It” and
“Kinder Yorn” mentioned and attached in the breakdown. An accompanist will be provided.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

A note on pronunciation for the song “No One Knows It” : the LY LY's at the end are pronounced LIE.
A note on the song Kinder Yorn, following are two YouTube performances to assist you in learning both the melody and the Yiddish. Start at the beginning of each YouTube for the first verse...but the 2nd verse of your audition cut is actually the last verse of the song--I indicate where to find it within each track.

A note from Douglas Levine, Music Director: “The rehearsal track locks you in to my ritard. at the end, but please use rubato as you see fit--I shall follow you! A bit of a challenge to be sure, and we're not expecting perfect Yiddish diction for the audition. But we need to hear how you take to the language, which by opening night would be sounding like your mamaloshen. My suggestion is to work the pronunciation one phrase at a time. And yes, there will be a music stand available for your use at the auditions.”

An unusual, Klezmer-based musical about historical figures Marc and Bella Chagall and their love story amid war-torn, mid-20th century Europe. Some songs in Yiddish, but advance knowledge of Yiddish not necessary (coaching will be provided). Imaginative play with music that asks the actors to transform and play several other characters that Marc and Bella encounter.
