BREAKDOWN

[JOSH]
Male, Caucasian, Jewish. Early 30’s. A working class guy from Canarsie who made it out of Queens to Harvard and from Harvard to a hedge fund. He’s remarkably successful professionally and is about to marry Katherine and be remarkably successful personally. Except that he has a secret he should have shared with his fiance long ago. Deeply charming. Tall, attractive, unapologetic, sexy and smart.

[KATHERINE]
Female, Wasp. Early 30’s. Beautiful, compassionate, smart. A pediatrician. Raised with privilege and wealth but managed to become a grounded, intelligent, successful young woman in her own right. Met Josh at Harvard and fell totally in love. Unaware of the secrets permeating and infecting her family’s life.

[GAIL]
Female, Caucasian, Katherine’s mother. 60’s. Southern, a gentle woman. Battling cancer. Looks the other way when behavior conflicts with her softer, gentler version of reality. Warm and kind but an enabler and in massive denial about the world around her.

[KAI]
Male, Asian American born in the United States, early 30’s. Unaccented English. Another alpha, also a Harvard Grad and co-worker of Josh’s though now his subordinate. Bit of a chip on his shoulder regarding how quickly Josh has risen in the same field. Intelligent, a new father, juggling the demands of making a living in Manhattan with his new child and his wife, Haley. Attractive, fit and strong though not terribly tall.

[HALEY]
Female, any ethnicity. Early 30’s. Katherine’s University and Med School roommate. Intelligent, a free spirit, counter-cultural. Warm and welcoming but suffering from postpartum depression and trying to re-enter the working world. An MD, concentrating in Cancer research.

[JOHNNY]
Male, Caucasian, Early 30’s. Josh’s childhood friend, his best friend. Also from Canarsie. Italian New York complete with accent. Did not go to college. Military, fit, funny, smart and tough. Loyal to a fault.

[ALAN]
Male, Jewish, Early 30’s. Associate Professor of Philosophy at Columbia. Progressive & liberal, from a tradition of Jewish enquiry and philanthropy. A nebbish. Funny, warm - not at all from the alpha male world of Josh and Kai. Has always carried a torch for Katherine but never stood a chance with Josh in the mix. Physically also a nebbish. Should be short, could be heavy, prematurely balding. Alan probably looked like he was 40 when he was 20.
