PRODUCTION DETAILS: The Democracy Project is a site-specific play written for and about Federal Hall by five celebrated writers of the American Theater: Tanya Barfield, Lisa D’Amour, Larissa FastHorse, Melissa James Gibson, Michael R. Jackson and Bruce Norris. When an employee of Federal Hall is asked to stand in for a sick actor in a play about Democracy at Federal Hall, she questions and incites the actors in the company and the viewing audience to question and confront the contradictions and aspirations of the founding ideals of the United States of America.
Please prepare (2) one-minute contemporary monologues.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

The audition room can accommodate no more than 52 individuals at a time.
The holding room can accommodate no more than 80 individuals at a time.
CASTING
ALICIA/ ACTOR 1: BLACK Female Identifying, 20’s. ALICIA a Federal Hall employee working in IT. When an actor in the company calls in sick, Alicia is called on to step in and play the role of Ona Judge, the enslaved servant of Martha Washington.
ACTOR 2: BLACK Male identifying, 30-40’s. An actor in the company who plays the role of BILLY LEE, a man enslaved by George Washington as his personal Valet. Also plays the role of MARTHA WASHINGTON 2, a version of Martha Washington who haunts the dream of George Washington on the eve he is to take the oath of office.
ACTOR 3: WHITE Female Identifying, 40-50’s. An Actor in the company who plays the role of MARTHA WASHINGTON as she haunts the dreams of her husband George on the eve of his inauguration. Also voices and puppeteers JAMES MADISON, a miniature version of the founding father as he devises Amendments for the Constitution. Also plays Henry Knox, the secretary of war.
ACTOR 4: ROLE CAST. NATIVE AMERICAN Male Identifying 30-40’s. An Actor in the company who plays the role of the Creek Chief ALEXANDER McGILLIVRAY on the night before he will sign the Treaty of New York with the United States Government. Also plays Martha Washington 3, a version of Martha who haunts the dream of George Washington on the eve he is to take the oath of office. ALSO plays a geriatric Senator advising Washington against the Quaker petition to end the Slave Trade.
ACTOR 5: ROLE CAST. WHITE Male Identifying 50-60’s. An Actor in the company who plays the role of GEORGE WASHINGTON.
