YOUNG ALBERT CASHIER: White, Transgender Man, Late Teens/Early Twenties. Vocal Range: Tenor/Alto. Young Albert is a female-bodied (but not female-identifying) soldier, looking for a place to feel useful in the world. Highly intelligent, introspective, principled and determined, Albert knows who he is, and demands that he be treated on his own terms.
NURSE RUTH SMITH: Any Ethnicity, Female-identifying (but not necessarily cisgender-female), Late 50s. Vocal Range: Alto. Tough and uncompromising, Nurse Smith is a firm believer in the value of rules and regulations. While she can sometimes appear stubborn and harsh, this demeanor is rooted in a belief in hard work and a distaste for entitlement.
BILLY MIDDLETON: White, Male, Late Teens/Early 20s. Vocal Range: Baritone. Ambitious, excitable, and arrogant. Billy is a rural kid who hasn’t been exposed to life outside of his small town. When we first meet Billy, he presents as overtly racist, but he demonstrates a capacity for change, and ultimately shows his heart.
MALE ENSEMBLE: Any Ethnicity, Male, Late /Early 20s. To play various roles.
