Breakdown
SEEKING:
ALSEMERO
LEADING ROLE. 30s. Joaquin Phoenix at 35 - A leading man who looks and sounds like the perfect prince, but turns out to be more interesting - with some paranoid peculiarities. Intense, passionate, handsome. Controlled and controlling.
JASPERINO
SUPPORTING ROLE. 30. Alsemero’s best friend. Lusty, but in a playful way only - Sweet-natured and very loyal, sincere.
BEATRICE-JOANNA
LEADING ROLE. 20s. Beautiful. Virginal. Mercurial. Sweet, then harsh. Daddy's little girl, and then a calculating murderess. Manipulative without being a vixen. Effortlessly charming. An innate capacity to seem sympathetic and innocent as she gets pulled ever further into doing deeds that are anything but. A young woman pulled in two directions - between what she should do and what her passions tell her she must do.
DIAPHANTA
SUPPORTING ROLE. 20s. A lusty virgin - she is playful and frolicsome - but ultimately innocent ands simply looking forward to experiencing and enjoying sex. A good servant who meets a bad end.
DE FLORES
LEADING ROLE. 30s-50. A nobleman fallen on hard times and forced into servitude. He lusts for the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, Beatrice-Joanna, and is drawn to her like a magnet. He is direct, brutish, pragmatic, masculine, and attractive in a rough and tumble way. A little bit like Iago, he is everybody’s most dependable servant for the dirty work.
ALIBIUS
MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE. 50s-60s. Entrepreneurial and enterprising Doctor - owner of a house to hold, heal and school “Fools” and “Madmen” -- A big-hearted, overly jealous fellow, who has had the luck to marry a beautiful young wife. Warm, ebullient, and humorous, without being completely foolish.
ANTONIO
MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE. 20s-30s. The real “changeling” of the title. A nobleman posing as a fool to live in the madhouse and pursue Isabella for love. Dances. Romantic, funny, versatile, playful.
PEDRO/FRANCISCUS
SUPPORTING ROLE. 20s-30s. Pedro is a wealthy gentleman and a good liar. Franciscus is a wealthy gentleman posing as a madman in order to pursue Isabella for love. Romantic, funny, versatile, playful, a little sharper in temperament than Antonio.
TOMAZO
SUPPORTING ROLE. 40s. Butch, older, wiser brother to Alonzo. Has a vengeful streak. Macho.
ALONZO
SUPPORTING ROLE. 30s. Romantic young man, totally smitten in love with Beatrice. After being brutally murdered, he haunts the castle as an ever-present bloody ghost. Warm-hearted, youthful and naive, not dumb.
ISABELLA
LEADING ROLE. 20s. Strong-willed, attractive, versatile. Good with comedy, can turn on a dime and play tragedy. Teaches the madmen, servants, and fools (her husband included) a lesson. She does it with grace and style and strength, without condescension, and with good humor.
---------------
The following roles have been CAST:
VERMANDERO
SUPPORTING ROLE. CAST 50s-70s. Proud and doting father, war veteran. Genial, but a military and efficient ruler of his castle. Strict code of honor.
CAST.
LOLLIO
LEADING ROLE. CAST 30s-50s. Servant to Alibius, a kind of comic version of DeFlores - but he has real bite too. Acerbic and lustful. Quick with a quip and good with a whip. Often too sharp for his master, but … not exactly a brainiac. Funny, but not a clown. Can be dangerous and frightening.
ALL ACTORS CAST WILL DOUBLE AS “MADMEN/FOOLS” IN THE ENSEMBLE FOR THE PRODUCTION.
ACTORS OF ANY ETHNICITY ARE WELCOME FOR ALL ROLES – A VERY DIVERSE CAST IS DESIRED.
STRONG VOICES & GOOD SPEECH REQUIRED FOR ALL ROLES.
ALL ACTORS MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH SHAKESPEARE AND VERSE-SPEAKING.
ACTORS WHO ARE PHYSICAL AND WHO CAN DANCE AND WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH MASKS ARE PREFERRED.
