THE BEACON

The Beacon Synopsis: A mysterious accident. A dead husband. People are talking. Secrets are resurfacing from the depths. Is the past ever truly dead? Beiv, a celebrated artist, has moved from suburban Dublin to her holiday cottage on an island off the coast of West Cork. But a dark shadow from the past hangs over her. When her estranged son and his new young wife arrive to stay, she is faced with some difficult questions.

SEEKING:

Beiv - Late 50s, early 60s. A celebrated artist. From Dublin but has moved to an island off the west coast of Cork to practice her art in peace. Her husband died many years ago in potentially mysterious circumstances. Traditional relationships have never been easy for Beiv, but she is determined to welcome her son Colm (and his new wife Bonnie) back home after many years. Beiv has an acid wit but wears it lightly. Compelling and captivating but, like many artists, also enigmatic and intimidating - you never quite know where you stand with her.

Colm - 30s, from Dublin but has lived in Silicon Valley for many years. Perhaps more similar to his mother, Beiv, than he would care to admit. His years in California, along with his professional success, have allowed him to reinvent himself and build the normalcy he craves in contrast to his “alternative” artist mother. Returning to Ireland, with his new, younger wife, his history catches up with him: he cannot escape the lack of clarity around his father’s death and the cracks in the facade of his new life are beginning to show. Colm can keep up with his mother’s wit but is capable of taking things too far, revealing a darker, more broken nature.

Donal - 30s, from West Cork. Having returned home from Australia after a painful breakup from the man he thought he would marry, Donal has settled back into life in West Cork. A staunch ally of Beiv, he defends her from journalists and nosy neighbours as well as helping her out with landscaping - finding peace in the manual labor. Donal has a confidence and integrity that stems from being comfortable in his own skin, while underneath lies a tenderness that he has learned to protect from the hurt of others - not least Colm, his childhood best friend who has just arrived back on the island after many years.

Bonnie - 20s, from California. Bonnie is an Art History graduate who studied Beiv’s work in school. She has recently married Colm and is excited about their first trip to Ireland to meet his mother and to be introduced to the other side of his life. Bonnie is naturally kind, curious and inquisitive and has the confidence of the young. Versed in therapy-speak and art theory, she hopes to bond with Beiv over her practice but can’t grasp that Beiv just wants to be left alone when she’s working. Bonnie is open and adventurous but has a strong backbone and wisdom beyond her years. She knows when to stand up for herself as she begins to understand Colm in a new context.

Ray - 20s, from South Dublin. A hipster type, the “Scorsese of podcasts”. He has travelled to the island to make a true crime series about Beiv and the rumours surrounding her husband’s death. He has a journalist’s moxy and is willing to push open any doors he can. Ray will try to charm himself into any situation but doesn’t always have the follow-through to land the story - happy to hide behind his microphone when things get tough.
