BREAKDOWN

SHE LOVES ME

SEEKING:

[AMALIA BALASH] Female, late 20s/mid 30s. Secretly in love with her unknown pen pal, who turns out to be her “rival” co-worker, Georg. She is warm, funny, shy, self-reliant and a bit eccentric, with a quiet confidence. Amalia is an outsider, both to the city and as the newest addition to Maraczek’s perfume shop. She’s looking for love and connection but feels uncertain she’ll ever find it. Classic lyric soprano with a solid high B.

[GEORG NOWACK] Male, late 20s/mid 30s. Secretly in love with his unknown pen pal, who turns out to be his “rival” co-worker, Amalia. Georg comes from humble beginnings and has worked at Maraczek’s perfume shop as a salesclerk for many years as Maraczek’s right-hand man. He takes great pride in his work and presents as strong and self-reliant but deep down, like Amalia, is looking for connection, love, and acceptance. Hard-headed, tender, awkward, and uses dry humor to hide his insecurities. He feels the weight of the world on his shoulders. Solid bari-tenor with a high F.

[ILLONA RITTER] Female, late 30s/early 40s. A salesclerk at Maraczek’s perfume shop. Illona is often misunderstood by her friends, family, and the men she dates. She is having an unrequited love affair with Stephen Kodaly. She knows she deserves better and is on a quest to find her self compassion, and ultimately, her self-love. She’s impatient, impulsive, and despite the setbacks, has a heart of gold and remains resilient. She has a deep love for her chosen family at Maraczek’s. Brassy belt with a high mix.

[STEPHEN KODALY / HEAD WAITER] Male, late 30s/early 40s. A salesclerk at Maraczek’s perfume shop. People call Stephen by his last name, “Kodaly” which tells a story in and of itself. He moves through the world using his charisma to get what he wants and can see people for who and what they are. While self-involved and manipulative, he brings joy to the shop and is too looking for connection, albeit through the wrong channels. Kodaly is a man always searching. Also doubles as the exasperated HEAD WAITER at Cafe Imperiale, where Amalia waits for her date. Pure musical theater tenor.

[ZOLTON MARACZEK] Male, late 50s/early 60s. The owner of the perfume shop, handed down from his father and grandfather. Maraczek is a tender but lonely man who has lost his connection to his wife. The employees of his shop are his beloved chosen family, even if he often gives them grief about their job performance. He’s tenacious, stubborn, generous, and is trying to find the silver linings of his mundane life as he ages. He sees a great deal of himself in Georg. Baritone.

[LADISLOV SIPOS / DETECTIVE / ENSEMBLE] Male, 40s. A salesclerk at Maraczek’s perfume shop. Sipos has always been a man who observes, and participates in, life from the “outside.” He’s wise beyond his years and has become the repository for everyone’s secrets. Though he’s cowardly and afraid, he loves his family, his children, and friends. He’s clever, quiet, and grounded. Will also double as a DETECTIVE Maraczek hires. Baritone.

[ARPAD LASZLO / BUSBOY / ENSEMBLE] BIPOC Male, 18 to 25. Arpad is a highly motivated and enthusiastic delivery boy who wants to be treated like a grown man and taken seriously. Incredibly bright, self-sufficient, and caring. Has no family in the city. Will also play the BUSBOY at the Cafe Imperiale. Dances well. Tenor.

[FEATURED CUSTOMER / ENSEMBLE] Female, late 40s/early 50s. Will play a variety of roles, including customers and Cafe patrons. Must move and sing well. Strong mezzo OR soprano.

[CUSTOMERS / ENSEMBLE] Two Females, 30s/early 40s. Will play a variety of roles, including customers and Cafe patrons. Must move and sing well. Strong mezzo OR soprano.
