BREAKDOWN

MACBETH
by William Shakespeare
Director: Devin Brain

Seeking:

Macbeth
30s. Physically and emotionally imposing, Macbeth is a general used to commanding from the front lines. Fiercely passionate, he binds a bottomless well of rage and love within the vise of an incisive moral intelligence. It is only when he is with Lady Macbeth, that we see his true vulnerability as his trust and love for her is absolute. As he descends into the play, his own dark urges are given free reign as he models himself after Lucifer and builds a kingdom within his own hell.

Lady Macbeth
20s/30s. Deeply ambitious and manipulative wife of Macbeth who convinces her husband to act on his desire for power and collaborates with him to accomplish their goals. Later becomes increasingly consumed by her guilt as it pulls her away from reality.

MacDuff
30s. A loyal father and soldier, a man who serves his lord without hesitation and who bites down his own rage and battle lust in order to avoid a fight. It is only after he has been backed into a corner, and watched both friends and family dies, that he steps forth and his righteous fury is unleashed.

Banquo
30s. A seasoned warrior who fought in the war with Macbeth. Ambitious yet noble, he later returns as a ghost to haunt Macbeth.

Duncan
late 30s/40s. King of Scotland, he is a noble and wise elder statesman who, confident after his victory in the recent war, rewards his supporters and executes his enemies to solidify his rule after a divisive conflict.

Lennox
20s/30s. A survivor, Lenox is clever and completely unscrupulous, he is a politician willing and able to do whatever is necessary to ensure his own survival.

Ross
30s/40s. Scottish noble close to Duncan. Gradually turns against Macbeth and joins Malcolm.

Malcolm
20s. Young, aristocratic prince with a disdain for the military’s warfare. Seeks to claim the throne from Macbeth after his father Duncan’s assassination.

1st Witch
Ageless and manipulative, she insidiously prophesies Macbeth’s kingship and persuades him into believing in his invincibility. Leader of the witches.

Lady MacDuff
30s. A dutiful wife who is suddenly and unexpectedly left alone with her children when MacDuff flees the kingdom.
