Breakdown
TARZAN: Male, Caucasian to play in his 20s. Needs a thrilling pop/rock tenor singing voice. Caught between the world of gorillas and the world of humans. Tarzan is a human raised by a family of apes in the African jungle. We must identify with him and care about him and his emotional journey. He is charming, sexy, vulnerable, animal-like, mysterious, curious, innocent, and has great humanity. He is physically lean but toned, like a swimmer; he is NOT a muscle man as in the traditional Tarzan-type! He should have strong upper body strength and be physical, agile, fearless, and very comfortable with movement and tackling aerial work. His body must be at one with the environment. Flies in the show.
JANE: Female, Caucasian to play English female in her 20s. Attractive, sexy, vulnerable, gutsy, lots of vitality, adventurous, fearless, funny, charming, and beguiling. The new woman of her time. Very witty with great comic timing and a wonderful energy, but also has a Victorian sweetness and refinement. Prim, proper but sexy, maintaining a great sense of humor and an enthusiasm for her “science”. Her falling in love for the first time – with Tarzan – is overwhelming to her. Must be game and be willing to be physical as Jane transforms into someone very courageous. Needs a terrific pop / rock singing voice. May fly in the show.
KALA: Female, to play in her 30s. Mother figure to Tarzan, with a fierceness, determination, and strong will. Through the passage of time she evolves into a mature, unconditionally loving figure with a big heart and great warmth. Although this character is a gorilla, we are seeking someone who’ll provide much acting skill and presence (NOT an actor hiding behind a costume). Needs a terrific pop/rock singing voice. May fly in the show.
KERCHAK: Male, to play in his 30s or 40s. Father figure to Tarzan and patriarch of his family and of the jungle. A physically impressive warrior. He is torn between his commitment as a responsible leader and his commitment as a compassionate husband and father. Although this character is a gorilla, we are seeking someone who’ll provide much acting skill and presence (NOT an actor hiding behind a costume). Needs a terrific baritone singing voice with lots of soul.
TERK: Male, to play in his 20s. Tarzan’s best friend. Always on the fringe, awkward, self-aware & ironic. Grateful to Tarzan, without whom he would surely be on the bottom rung. An outcast, trying to fit in. Must be funny, witty, unique, and game. Although this character is a gorilla, we are seeking someone who’ll provide comedic acting skills and a presence (NOT an actor hiding behind a costume). Must also be physical and agile. Needs a terrific pop / rock singing voice. May fly in the show.
CLAYTON: Male, to play in his 30s. A classic, smooth con man. Handsome, sexual, and charming. He pursues Jane and out to capture the gorillas for his own personal, financial gain. Non-singing role. Cold reading will be provided on the audition day.
PORTER: Male, Caucasian to play English male in his 50s or 60s. Jane’s dad. Dignified, maintains an integrity and enthusiasm about his “science”. Eccentric, funny, whimsical, absent-minded. Needs a pleasant character singing voice.
ENSEMBLE SINGERS: Male and female singers/actors to play 18 – 30s. Seeking fantastic pop / rock singing voices and interesting personalities. Must be physical and agile. All ensemble singers will need to be prepared to fly. Will also fill out the understudy needs of the show.
ENSEMBLE DANCERS: Males and females, to play 18 – 30s. Should be skilled, fit dancers / actors with a wide range of physical ability and some experience in modern/contemporary dance. Seeking people with acrobatic skills using upper body strength; forms of dance that are very athletic and strength-oriented; Singing ability is also necessary. All of the dancers need to be prepared to fly.
Young Performers - Boys - ages 9-15. Strong vocals and previous stage experience preferable
YOUNG TARZAN: Boy, to play the age of 9-12. A vulnerable and charming little boy who has been rescued and raised by the apes. Unaware that he different from the rest of his family, he struggles to belong. Flies in the show.
YOUNG TERK: Boy, to play 12-15. Young Tarzan's best friend. Must be able to play funny, witty and sarcastic. Needs to have great comedic timing and be a strong singer. Flies in the show.
