**All roles must be comfortable with working with children and most, if not all, cannot have a fear of heights. There are a few exceptions to this.
TARZAN – Male, 20-35 yrs old (Strong Rock Tenor). The adult Ape Man, innocent, playful, strong, virile, ruggedly handsome, loves Jane, must sing and dance well, stage combat, needs to be able to mock a British accent when first imitating Jane, possible tumbling, will fly. This role is a tall order. We not only need someone in EXCELLENT physical shape and have a great voice, but be an extremely honest actor.
JANE PORTER - Female, 20-35 yrs old (Mezzo - Soprano Pop Musical Theatre who can transition to a soulful approach in intimate moments. Needs to have a nice bottom register). Eager British student of botany, quirky, natural beauty, slight dancing, slight combat, will fly, British accent. Looking for a character actress that has a great sense of comic timing, but is also an honest and gifted actor. Needs to be in excellent physical shape. We are not looking for this role to be vocally what it was originally. We want someone that has a big, warm pop belt and less musical theatre ingénue; can still do that when the moments need it.
KALA - Female, 30-45 yrs old (Pop Alto with soul). A gentle mother Ape, Kerchak’s mate, very earthy and nurturing, strong-willed, must sing and moves well or dances well is a plus, slight combat, possibly fly. She must be an actress of GREAT depth. She is the heart of the show. She needs to be someone that understands being mother or someone that has desperately longed to be a mother. She must be in excellent physical condition.
KERCHAK - Male, 40-55 yrs old (High Baritone with pop musical theater background). Gruff bull Ape, leader of the Tribe, confident and a bit cocky, loves Kala with a passion, protective, must sing and dance well, stage combat required, possibly fly. This is probably the most difficult role in the show. He must be a very gifted actor and a commanding presence (without trying) in order to for his role to work. Must be in excellent physical condition.
TERK - Male, 20-30 yrs old (Motown Tenor, lots of Soul). Young adult male Ape, Tarzan’s best friend, very sarcastic, playful and active, must sing and dance extremely well, possible tumbling, will fly.
PROF. PORTER - Male, 55-65 yrs old (Pop Musical Theatre Tenor). Bumbling British professor of biology, father of Jane, good-natured and accepting, British accent. Ideally looking for someone slight of height, but will consider all physical types. Must be a honest and loveable comedian.
MR. CLAYTON - Male, 35-45 yrs old. Brutish British expedition guide, arrogant, greedy, has an interest in Jane, little singing, stage combat required, British accent. He should be physically large and, ideally, in shape and look like he could be a match for Tarzan in a fight. This is a role for an actor that can sing well enough; a singer is a plus. Should be the villain you love to hate.
SNIPES - Male, 25-35 yrs old. Head of the expedition crew, stage combat, British accent, possibly double as the LEOPARD
LEOPARD - Male, 25-35 yrs old. The enemy of the Apes, a villain, a killer, very strong, must move very well; dancer a plus, stage combat, possibly double as SNIPES. In excellent physical shape. Must be an actor that can channel the energy of a blood thirsty killer. Will fly.
TARZAN’S FATHER - Male, 25-35 yrs old. (Contemporary Musical Theater Baritone) British gentleman, young father, inexperienced with the jungle, must sing well, strong presence, stage combat, will double in the ENSEMBLE. Will fly.
TARZAN’S MOTHER - Female, 25-35 yrs old. (Contemporary Musical Theater Alto/Mezzo) British lady, young mother, beautiful and fragile, must sing well, stage combat, will also double in the ENSEMBLE. Will fly.
YOUNG TERK – Male, 8-11 years old. Smarter than your average age, or so he thinks. Very funny. Sarcastic adolescent Ape, highly energetic, positive attitude, must sing and dance well, possible tumbling, possible flying
FEMALE ENSEMBLE: Women, 20-50 yrs old. Ape Tribe/Jungle Creatures/Tarzan’s Mother swimming double. All must sing well, some must be excellent dancers, some will be tumbling, most will fly, some will be involved with combat; 2 will fly over the audience and cannot be afraid of heights. Style of dance jazz/hip hop/African. Tumbling, silks, and aerial work a plus. All vocal ranges needed, needs a jazz background/understanding, soul/rock intensity. Singers must move well; everyone must move, not everyone must dance.
MALE ENSEMBLE: Males, 20-50 yrs old. Ape Tribe/Expedition Crew/Jungle Creatures/Tarzan’s Father swimming double.
