BREAKDOWN
[JASON]
(Male, Early-Late 20’s, Caucasian) White American of German descent.
In 2000, he is 21 years old, and works the line at Olmstead’s, a steel tubing factory. He is impulsive, exuberant, and loyal to a point. Fights to defend his place in the world.
In 2008, he is 29 and on parole. He is now fueled by pride and shame. Desperate to figure out where he belongs.
[CHRIS]
(Male, Early-Late 20’s, African American) In 2000, he is 21 years old, and works the line at Olmstead’s, a steel tubing factory. Chris is goal-oriented, ambitious, a devoted friend, good son, and a bit of a player. He wants to do something different with his life. Tries to bring Jason along in his vision for the future. In 2008, he is 29 and on parole. Suffers anxiety and deep shame regarding his crime. He is reaching out to God and others to (maybe, possibly?) find forgiveness.
[STAN]
(Male, Mid 50’s, Caucasian) White American of German descent. Stan is the bartender at a bar frequented by Olmstead’s workers. Walks with a pronounced limp from an old factory injury. He is kind, flirtatious, and attentive to change. A good listener and critical thinker; he sees his community with a wide lens. Stan values hard work, loyalty, and human decency. He strives to keep his friends and their families together as events force them apart.
[OSCAR]
(Male, Early 20’s- Early 30’s, Latino) Colombian-American. A bus boy and quiet but visible presence in the life of the bar he ends up managing 8 years later. He is methodical, alert, and ambitious. Oscar was born and raised in Berks County yet he is shunned by the union workers he serves every day. He takes care of those who show kindness to him. Fights for the best life he can get for himself with his own hard work and determination.
[BRUCIE] (Male, Late 40’s-Early 50’s, African American) Works on the floor at the textile mill and is currently on strike. He is struggling to survive and fighting addiction. Charming when sober, but unrecognizable to loved ones when using. Brucie feels betrayed by politics and authority. He is desperate to regain Cynthia’s love and attention, and wants someone to show him where to go next. He feels frozen and out of control.
[TRACEY]
(Female, Mid 40’s-Early 50’s, Caucasian)White American of German descent. In 2000, she is 45 and employed on the floor at Olmstead’s. She is a widowed single mother to Jason, and best friend to Cynthia, her co-worker of 20+ years. Tracey is a worker and a laugher. She has dyslexia and has faced her share of obstacles to secure a stable life. She fights for loyalty, camaraderie, and refuge from uncertainty. Stokes fires and punishes betrayal. In 2008, she is 53 and struggling with opioid addiction. Battles all threats indiscriminately. Physically broken by both decades of hard labor and the loss of it.
[CYNTHIA]
(Female, Mid 40’s-Early 50’s, African American) In 2000, she is 45 and employed on the floor at Olmstead’s until she applies for and gets a job in management. Mother to Chris and best friend to Tracey, her co-worker of 20+ years. She is a worker, an optimist, and a pragmatist. Future-oriented, compassionate, and undaunted in defending the life she’s built. In 2008, she is 53 and working at a nursing home. Physically weathered by decades of manual work. Has lost her house, job, and best friend in the wake of economic change yet retains her strength, resilience, and pride.
