STUDIO MAIN SERIES:

BAD JEWS
by Joshua Harmon
Directed by Serge Seiden
1st reh: 11/9/15. Opens: 12/6. Closes: 1/3/16
Potential Extension through: 1/31/16

Note: All roles have been CAST. Actors will be considered for possible replacements if needed:

Daphna
(ROLE CAST)
22, female, Jewish. Liam & Jonah’s first cousin. 2/3 body, 1/3 hair. Daphna is very connected to her Jewish heritage. She is highly opinionated and easily lets her defensiveness turn into aggression towards her opponents. Subtlety is not in her nature. Argumentative. The actor must have the ability to approach the material with a sense of humor and wit and possess strong comedic timing.

Liam
(ROLE CAST)
25, male, Jewish. Daphna’s cousin. Attractive, put-together young professional on a trajectory for success. U of Chicago Asian Studies PhD student. Former Fulbright scholar in Japan. Has as much of a sense of humor as an overdue library book. Clearly lost his tolerance for Daphna a long time ago and isn’t discreet about the way he feels.

Jonah
(ROLE CAST)
21, male, Jewish. Liam’s younger brother. Sometime-UVM sophomore. Just a regular guy - less lanky than his brother. Less brainy. More brawn. More heart. Sensitive. Doesn’t always speak up but when he does, it makes a strong impact. Caught in the middle.

Melody
(ROLE CAST)
24, female, very clearly not Jewish. Liam’s girlfriend. Quite pretty and blonde. Dreams of being an opera singer but is unaware that she has a terrible voice. She is currently working as an administrator at a high school for underprivileged kids with only a treble clef tattoo to remind her of her love of music. A peacemaker with a positive outlook on life.

The following roles have been CAST. Actors will be considered for possible replacements if needed:

Pops

Oswaldo
(ROLE CAST)
30s, Latino. A recovering addict, used to be in prison. Claims Pops as his paternal figure. Has a distant and tumultuous relationship with his real father.

Detective Audrey O’Connor
(ROLE CAST)
40s-50s, White. Pops’ old partner on the force. Engaged to Lieutenant Caro. Loves Pops and wants him to settle for his own good.

Lulu
(ROLE CAST)
20s, Latina. Junior’s girlfriend. Has also adopted Pops as her own dad. Beautiful, but not as bright.

Lieutenant Caro
(ROLE CAST)
40s-50s, White. Engaged to Detective O’Connor. Determined to convince Pops to give up on fighting the case regarding his shooting and settle. Doesn’t see the case the way Pops does.

Junior
(ROLE CAST)
30s, African American. Pops’ real son. Is illegally stealing and selling electronics from inside of their house. Loves his father, though he has trouble showing it.

Teresa Lynch
60, from Dublin. Matriarch of the family. Ailing and in need of help from her daughters. Often avoids emotional confrontation through ignoring the family’s past or by overdosing on her medication.

Dave Blake
30, from Dublin. Ciara’s good-natured husband, often a caretaker for Teresa.

The following roles have been CAST. Actors will be considered for possible replacements if needed:

Ruth Pigeon
(ROLE CAST)
27, from Chichester, England. New wife of Nial. Adores him. Is very English.

Judge Brack
40-55. A local magistrate and Hedda's closest friend in town. Together they laugh at the smallness of the town. A big fish in a small pond, he is a worldly and cynical man who enjoys his small amount of power.

Ejlert Lövborg
30-40. A genius, Ejlert Lövoborg is Tesman’s biggest competitor in the academic world. His visionary talent battles with a dark self loathing that causes him to seek escape in drink, woman, and any vices he can get his hands on.

Thea Elvsted
25-35. A meek but passionate woman. She has a sharp intellect, and yearns to break free from a stale and tired marriage to an older man for a life of purpose.

Skill with puppets a plus.
