Seeking:

Ancestor

Aunt Tina: black; goddess of war; also plays Scylla, the sea creature. Goddess of wisdom in her human state; strong-willed and purposeful woman on a rescue mission to save her nephew Ulysses. Sassy-mouthed, cheeky with a fire-starter attitude, prescient/clairvoyant; loving. Powerful. Sings really well.

Mortals

Ulysses: black, a vet from the Gulf War, age 20 in Act I; 33 in Act II
Married to Nella Pell. Father of Malachi. The hero on a journey/quest: lost, adrift, hurting, deeply guilt-ridden for having killed; in search of his whole self; searching for his chapters in history; traversing through his blood; chasing his Destiny; learning recipes, history songs, his story course; needing to reintegrate himself; desperately trying to get home. A large universal spirit. Deeply in love with his wife Nella Pell. Missing her like crazy while adrift at sea.

Nella Pell: black, Ulysses Lincoln’s wife, age 21 in Act I, 34 in Act II
Faithful, long-suffering, patiently waiting for Ulysses’ return; pregnant and alone in Act I, fending off suitors; stubbornly believes Ulysses is still alive despite what she’s been told; single mom raising young Malachi in Act II; she considers marrying to have a male role model for Malachi. Never stops believing that Ulysses will return to her as he promised; she is his “lighthouse”.

Malachi: black, son to Ulysses and Nella Pell; age 13; also plays Poly’famous
Man-child trying to find his way in the world without a Dad figure. Head-strong, feisty, hot-blooded, proud, won’t take no s*it from nobody; politically conscious; having difficulty managing his anger as he encounters oppression. Thinks he grown.

Artez Sabine: black, Grand Marshal of a Second Line, age 49; also plays Alabama Slim; The Soul Siren; The Alter Ego, Police Officer 2
Pragmatic survivor; proud; aware of history; bickers with his wife Alsendra whom he loves; believes the government will rescue them; has tunnel-vision focus on leading the march; knows the end is near and is prepared for it - he’s going to glory where the saints come marching in.

Alsendra Sabine: black, Artez’ wife, mother of Benevolence, age 40; also plays Circe Nzinga, the great conductor; Carib’diss, a sea creature, and Calypso, the greatest ancestor. Full of life and vinegar; brassy. Bickers with her husband Artez whom she loves. Protective of her daughter. A handful.

Benevolence Nausicca Sabine: black, daughter to Alsendra and Artez, age 10; also plays African Ancestor. Precocious, garrulous, fearless, open to the world; bluntly honest like kids are; entrepreneurial; loves to hear stories; is Ulysses’ mother in disguise and reveals herself as such in Act II as the loving, nurturing dutiful African Ancestor assisting Ulysses on his hero journey/quest.
