BREAKDOWN

WOMEN

Actor 1: Female to play both Maria (female) and Costard (male) – MARIA: A lady in the Court of France / COSTARD: A rustic peasant. 25-35, any race/ethnicity, carefree with an emphasis on enjoying life; Maria and Costard each enjoy life’s pleasures: Maria the gifts of her high-born station, Costard the little things.

Princess – (pre-cast) Princess of France, 25-35, any race/ethnicity, a born ruler; has arrived in Navarre to discuss diplomacy between the two nations. Favors compromise and will work for it, but will ultimately do what it takes to ensure the safety and security of her home and country, above all others.

Rosaline – A lady in the Court of France, 25-35, any race/ethnicity, the brains of this outfit; an advisor to the Princess, her intelligence gives way to an air of superiority, though it’s a façade to hide the hurt from a former love scorned. Plays guitar and sings.

Female Cover – All WOMEN roles.

MEN

Armado/Boyet – One actor to play both roles. Male. ARMADO: A magical Spaniard in the court of Navarre / BOYET: A page in the service of the ladies of France. 25-40, any race/ethnicity, steadfast and loyal; Armado and Boyet honor themselves by pledging fealty to their respective kin. They are both eccentric in the way they interact and respond to their respective worlds. Armado is a man of ceremony, while Boyet is a man of celebration and flamboyance. Armado bears a pronounced Spanish (of Spain) accent.

Berowne – A lord in the Court of Navarre, 25-35, any race/ethnicity, a wry cynic; asserts his value through a discriminating taste in life’s experiences, a keen wit, and an emotional armor. This character sings.

Longaville – A lord in the Court of Navarre, 25-35, any race/ethnicity, lighthearted and of great culinary talent; happy to concern himself with work and not worry about the ethical and philosophical arguments of the other men. Doesn’t believe he’s skilled in the ways of relationships or romance.

Navarre – King of Navarre, 25-35, any race/ethnicity, a leader of his people; when he enters a room he’s the only one you see, beautiful and strong, though self-conscious when alone with his thoughts and doubts. Plays the piano.

Male Cover – All MEN roles.

Forester – Male or Female. The production’s guide through preparation, presentation, and service of the meal, 25-50, any race/ethnicity; a steward of Navarre’s lands and livestock, no one knows better their way around the forests and fields. Trained chef needed with excellent timing, poise, and stage presence.
