SEEKING
San Diego REP is currently seeking actors and singer/dancers for their upcoming 43rd Season. San Diego REP is extremely committed to diverse casting and strongly encourage actors of all ethnicities to audition.
PREPARATION
For dramatic auditions, prep two (2) one-min contrasting contemporary monologues. For musical auditions, prepare one (1) one-min monologue and 16-32 bars of a musical theatre song. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music organized, and your headshot stapled together.

ALISON
(Late 30s to Early 40s) The narrator of this story. Now a self-aware adult, she is able to reflect insightfully on her own life and her relationship with her father before his tragic death. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Range = low E to light belt C sharp.
BRUCE
(40s) Alison’s father. A high-school English teacher and funeral home director, who spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home. A complex man with a hot temper as a result of years of repression. He can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Range = B to G.
HELEN
(40s) Alison’s mother. Frustrated and exhausted by her tumultuous marriage. She has spent her life trying to be a good mother and wife while turning a blind eye to the irreverent activities of her husband. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Range = A flat to strong mixed E.
MEDIUM ALISON
(Early to mid-20s to play 19) Alison Bechdel as a freshman at Oberlin college, discovering her sexuality. For an incredibly well-read, hyper-intelligent teenager, her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Strong mix-belt to C and effortless mix to E.
JOAN
(Early to mid-20s to play 19) A student at Oberlin. She exudes a confident, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor. Unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a lesbian. Seeking an actor who is comfortable with some harmony singing. Alto.
SEEKING ONE MALE TO PLAY: ROY / PETE/ MARK / BOBBY JEREMY
(Early 20s) Roy, a young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination. Seeking a singer with a strong clean 70s pop sound - to a B.

RAY
Male, 38. Korean American. Born in America. Doesn't speak Korean. Acerbic, sarcastic, and thinks with his gut. Not one to dwell on uncomfortable or sad thoughts. Likes to stay in motion and keep busy. A guy's guy, he would rather smoke in the back with his friends than talk about feelings. Likes grubby food and is unpretentious, sharp, and competitive.
RAY’S FATHER
Male, 60-79. Born in Korea. Lived in America for over four decades. An aloof, reserved man who has trouble showing emotion.
CORNELIA
Female, 28. Korean American. Born in Korea, raised mostly in America. Fluent in Korean and English. Sharp, tough, and intimidating. Her hard exterior covers (what else?) a soft side. She's a romantic in the guise of a ball-buster.
STRANGER/UNCLE
Male, 50-69. Korean. Speaks only Korean. An old bachelor. Kindly and warm-hearted. A bit eccentric. He is earthy and a little rough around the edges.
LUCIEN
Male, 46-54. West African. A naturalized citizen who came as a refugee. He works as a hospice nurse. He is no-nonsense and matter-of-fact. But he is kind, experienced, and comfortable with death as well as with the outsized emotions of those dealing with death.
DIANE
Female, 40. American. Affluent (and not entirely comfortable with it), liberal, and well-traveled. She's affable and warm with a self-deprecating sense of humor. Has a quality of sadness or lostness that comes out in the briefest glimpses.

Female, 65-75. The Helmer’s nanny; honest, blunt and big-hearted.
EMMY
Female, 18-25. Nora’s and Torvald’s daughter; an old soul and a romantic; wise and mature in some ways, but still 18.
