NOTE: SALLY & TOM is a play within a play – an off-off-Broadway theater troop telling the story of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson, or, some version of the story? Luce is the playwright (and also plays Sally). Mike is the director (and also plays Tom). And, Luce and Mike are a couple. All characters wear many hats, each working both as backstage company members and as actors.
[LUCE / SALLY] she/her, black, early-mid 30s. The writer. Very self-possessed, she considers everyone’s opinions but ultimately listens to her own voice first. Comfortable in her own skin, she exudes a natural sexuality. In a genuine, supportive relationship with Mike, while keenly navigating the racial and sexual politics inherent in both their personal and professional relationship. Innately smart and driven.
[MIKE / TOM] he/him, white, late 30s-early 40s. The director. Mike lives and works at the top of his potential, and manifesting his best. He is hyper aware of what he does not know, and genuinely strives to get it right. In a rooted and mutually loving relationship with Luce. Will do all in his power to succeed.
[MAGGIE] she/her, black, late 30s. The publicist and fight director, doubles as MARY. A long time close friend to Luce, and usually ahead of her when it comes to insights. Truly believes in the theater and Luce’s brilliance, which is why she’s willing to serve the company even though she does not need to work. Maggie is very well off. She’s also smart, independent, and confident in her strength, and suffers no fools.
[KWAME] he/him, black, 30s (aka “K-DUBB”). Luce’s ex-boyfriend, almost famous, doubles as JAMES (Sally’s brother). A talented actor who has had commercial/TV success, he is genuinely thrilled to be an anchor for this production. This is his chance to reveal his integral talent and complicated nature. Aware of the gift that his presence can give to the company, he’s all-in, until he isn’t.
[GINGER] she/her, white, 30s. The dramaturg and choreographer, doubles as PATSY (Jefferson’s daughter). A warhorse of the theater company, Ginger has seen it all and is willing to do whatever it takes to make the show happen. Tough, she takes great pride in her work. A mentor to Scout.
[SCOUT] she/her, AAPI, 20s. The stage manager and dance captain, doubles as POLLY (Jefferson’s daughter). Wants desperately to be an actor. The least worldly and most naive of the group. Looks up to Ginger as a mentor.
[GEOFF] he/him, white, early 40s. The set and costume designer, doubles as COOPER. Effective and good at what he does; he’s been around. It’s a surprise to him that he makes a flirtatious connection with Devon; not certain he’s looking for anything serious.
[DEVON] he/him, black, early 30s. The music, lights, and sound designer, doubles as NATHAN. He is a striver. He likes Geoff, and also likes the idea of a slightly older man helping him get to the next level. Ideally plays the fiddle.
