Elaine Wheeler: Wife, emotionally fragile and feels betrayed. Suspicious and haunted by a tragic past; Elaine looks for validation; when it is not forthcoming, she questions her sanity. Slowly builds up confidence as the play progresses.
John Wheeler: Elaine's husband. Stockbroker, businessman. Very practical and in charge of his home. Deals with all problems quickly and logically; dismissive of his wife's story, he is exasperated by her erratic behavior.
Blanche Cooke: Elaine’s best friend. A nurse by training, she presents an efficient and tailored appearance. Currently a houseguest in the Wheeler townhouse, she is concerned for Elaine’s mental health.
Vanelli/Curtis Appleby: Vanelli - Streetwise NYPD patrolman. Affable, has an eye for fine art. Impressed by the Wheelers' collection. Curtis Appleby - Eccentric neighbor. Local busybody; particularly interested in the Wheeler home and what takes place there. Is especially fascinated by the subject of murder, a fascination that perhaps has become an obsession.
Dr. Tracey Lake/Helga: Dr. Tracey Lake - Noted psychologist. Professional clinical demeanor. Observes Elaine; tries to gain her confidence. Helga - German maid. Was Elaine's maid for years before the Wheelers were married. Seems loyal to Elaine and distrustful of John.
Sam Hoke/Lieutenant Walker: Sam Hoke - Owner of local deli. A large, shabby, working-class man. Talk of murder is hurting his business. Frustrated, angry, defensive and perhaps a little nervous. Lieutenant Walker - Homicide detective. Jaded and overworked, has no time for wild goose chases. Concerned only with doing the job.

VIRGINIA BASS – mid-to-late twenties, Black. Driven, outspoken, and effervescent, Virginia is both beyond her years and ahead of her time. It’s always been hard for her to sit still.
JOHN BASS – early fifties, Black. John is Virginia’s father. He is brusque and proud to a fault, but this pride conceals his fear that he is failing as a father and provider. He is deeply suspicious of strangers.
REV. MAXWELL – late twenties, Black. Rev. Eugene Maxwell is a close family friend of the Bass family, and still holds a torch for Virginia from when they were teenagers. His meek exterior hides a quiet intensity.
GEORGE OAKLEY – mid-thirties, White. George is Virginia’s traveling sales companion. He is nerdy, eager, bumbling, and completely devoted to promoting the latest technology.
LOTTIE DICKERSON – mid-to-late fifties, Black. As John’s older sister, Lottie is in some ways the moral compass of the family. She is a bored widow who meddles in everyone else’s business.
DAISY BASS – mid-teens, Black. Daisy is bursting with energy but isn’t yet sure how to channel it. She is indescribably nosy and develops crushes easily. She still believes in the best in people.
