Breakdown
Now in its fifth year, The Public Theater’s MOBILE SHAKESPEARE INITIATIVE is focused on bringing Shakespeare to non-traditional venues such as prisons, homeless shelters, and centers for disadvantaged youth around the tri-state area. Actors travel by company van and participate in set-up and striking of small scenic elements, props, and costumes. The company will present approximately six performances per week during the tour. The final three weeks will be played at The Public Theater with eight performances per week, and will be open to the general public.
Seeking a diverse group of collaborative, language-oriented actors who enjoy working in a physical style. All roles will double with multiple characters. Please submit qualified actors of all cultures and ages, disabled and non-disabled.
Musical/instrumental skills a plus for all roles (please make note of any instruments played in submission).
In the classic tale of star-cross’d lovers, young Romeo and Juliet become fortune’s fools when an ancient grudge between their families forces them to sacrifice all for the chance to be together.
SEEKING:
JULIET:
18+ to play late teens. Female. We are particularly interested in casting an actor of color in this role. Fiery, strong willed, and brave. Tough and headstrong. Searching to discover what love is in a violent world. Falls deeply in love with Romeo, the son of her family’s enemy, and displays incredible courage in pursuing that love.
ROMEO:
18+ to play late teens. Male. We are particularly interested in casting an actor of color in this role. Idealistic, passionate, funny, tender, impulsive. Masculine. Searching to discover what love is in a violent world. Falls deeply in love with Juliet, the daughter of his family’s enemy. Has deep, playful friendships with Mercutio and Benvolio. Torn between loyalties, Romeo falls into violence and cannot escape the cycle of his fate.
LORD CAPULET/ FRIAR LAURENCE/OTHERS:
30’s – mid 40’s. Male. Any ethnicity. To play LORD CAPULET: Juliet’s severe, violent father. A power-hungry, image-obsessed man, who is deeply invested in matching his daughter with a wealthy suitor. This role will double with other roles, including but not limited to FRIAR LAURENCE: Confidant to Romeo. Somewhat hapless and befuddled. A peacemaker, he has the best intentions to both help the young lovers and to maintain peace between the two families. A role for an actor with a strong facility with language, possessing equal parts intimidation AND humor. Strong clowning skills a plus.
NURSE/LORD MONTAGUE/OTHERS:
20s-40s. Female. Any ethnicity. Juliet’s confidant. Easily distracted, big hearted and warm, skilled with physical comedy. A comic tour de force role that requires an actress of great comedic skill AND dramatic depth, with an ability to shift quickly and deftly between both. This role will double with other roles, including but not limited to LORD MONTAGUE: Romeo’s father. Consumed by his feud with the Capulets, but not completely blind to the changes in his son’s behavior.
MERCUTIO/PRINCE ESCALUS/OTHERS:
Early 20s-30s. Male. Any ethnicity. Romeo’s best friend. A master of wit, imagination, and playfulness. Hotheaded, extroverted, sexually charged. Charismatic. The king of word play. This role will double with other roles, including but not limited to PRINCE ESCALUS: A leader presiding over a land in perpetual strife. This role will double with other, smaller roles.
LADY CAPULET/OTHERS:
20s-40s. Female. Any ethnicity. To play LADY CAPULET: Juliet’s mother, who herself was wed at a young age. Prioritizes family honor and the will of her husband in the face of her daughter’s passion and pain. This role will double with other, smaller roles.
BENVOLIO/OTHERS:
20s. Male. Any ethnicity. Romeo’s cousin. More level-headed than his friends, though still a young man from a violent culture. He has a tenderness about him, and is a ferociously loyal friend. This role will double with other, smaller roles.
TYBALT/OTHERS:
20s. Male or Female. Any ethnicity. Juliet’s cousin. Hot-tempered and prone to aggression, quick to seek revenge. Vain and proud, and obsessively focused on the enmity between the Montague and Capulet families. This role will double with other, smaller roles. For this doubling, we are especially interested in actors who play multiple musical instruments that can be carried and/or easily transported (i.e. string instruments, woodwinds, hand drums, etc.).
