BREAKDOWN
REVIVAL is an ensemble piece with actors playing multiple roles (E.g. Marat/Sade, Spunk, Spell #7, Story Theater.) with a supple flair for heightened Classical Language being essential. All should sing and move well. Triple threats are always welcome. Actors do not have to play the guitar.

Seeking:
[TWO/ARCHANGEL MICHAEL/DICK WATERMAN] (Male, African-American, 30’s-40s) As Michael, he is a Warrior of Old Testament character. Arrogant and condescending Michael chooses to embody characters that support his worldview with a maniacal sense of Right and wrong. He is also oblivious to his own shortcomings and unforgiving of others. As Dick, he becomes a gregarious follower of the Blues. He is wide-eyed with youthful exuberance but naïve to the task of trying to take on Son’s cause and the troubles that come with it.
[THREE/ESHU/WILLIE BROWN] (Male, African-American, 30’s to ’40s) A Trickster and skilled Politician as Eshu. Eshu chafes at Christian dogma and works pragmatically to get what he wants. A pragmatist who enjoys the political infighting. As Willie Brown, he is Son’s Best friend and a loyal partner. He is a musical giant himself but willing to yield the spotlight. A pious man He also has the courage to tell Son when he’s doing wrong even at the risk of dooming the friendship. A Rock.
[FOUR/CHARLIE PATTON/ BARON SAMEDI] (Male, African-American, 30’s to ’40s) Four as Charlie, He’s a man living life by his own rules and willing to pay the price for that. He is a gregarious man, but one who is quick to anger and will take no quarter. He can also sing his ass off in a variety of styles. As the Baron, he is bound to the ceremony but works to see that African ethics are realized and respected. He’s a master of the Dark Arts and not adverse to using them to bring him into conflict with the Christian Seraph. The Baron speaks only when he truly has something to say, but will always be listening and taking full stock of situations and planning his next move and that of others, friend and foe.
[FIVE/MERETSEGER/SARA KNIGHT] (Female, African-American, 30's- 40's) A pagan Goddess who delights in new adventures. Her vivacious and curious nature leads her down to the depths. She is as old as time but retains a youthful curiosity. As Sara, she is a self-made entrepreneur, who is fearless in a very dark time in Mississippi. Quick to joke or flirt, but always eying the bottom line.
[SIX/ARCHANGEL GABRIEL/CARRIE MARTIN] (Female, African-American, 30's) The Leader of the Judgment. Gabriel wants to please God above all else and is driven to that, Gabriel strives to rise above her own prejudices to lay down an honest judgment. She is wise and will battle to keep decorum. She is measured and not prone to a rash decision. As Carrie Martin: Six is a strong, Sensuous woman, born before her time, but prone to be trapped by her vices which makes her path rocky. She loves hard but sees life as gray. Honest even to a fault. Is at her core an honest soul.
[SEVEN/ARCHANGEL SANDALPHON/EVIE,SON’S WIFE] (Female, African-American, 30’s) As Sandalphon, Seven is a young inexperienced Seraph but wants desperately to save Son from damnation even to the point of coloring outside the lines in her behavior. She takes his trials personally and wants to change an outcome she believes is a foregone conclusion. As Evie: Seven is a simple soul who loves Son and sees in him his potential to be a better man, but is not naïve or truly accepting of his faults. She has a fierce hatred of the blues and of sinful living. Evie wants desperately to know peace and be rewarded for her faith in spite of everything she has endured.
