Breakdown
WE ARE LOOKING FOR ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES TO FORM AN ENSEMBLE THAT REFLECTS THE DIVERSITY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD AND OF OUR SOCIETY.
HELICANUS (early 40s-mid 50s at the start of the play, 60s at its end). Helicanus is Pericles’s loyal servant and advisor, a devoted attendant like Lear’s Kent and Antony’s Enobarbus. He guides Tyre in Pericles’s absence and looks after his Prince when tragedy falls. Pragmatic and kind-hearted, intelligent and commited to honesty, Helicanus is first and foremost a man of principle.
SIMONIDES (50s) King of Pentapolis, Simonides is the model of a good, humane, and incorruptible king. A generous man, Simonides is able to see beneath Pericles’s impoverished circumstances and honors him even before he learns of his nobility. In contrast to the corrupted Antiochus, Simonides is a devoted father who guides his daughter through her growing love for Pericles. An esteemed ruler, Simonides is also an approachable man—good-humored, jovial, and witty.
LYSIMACHUS (early 30s) Governor of Myteline. Bright-witted and charismatic, Lysimachus is a man of loose morals until his encounter with Marina makes him reevaluate his actions. Through her, he rediscovers honor and strives again toward virtue. Ultimately, Pericles sees him as a man noble enough to marry his daughter and rule Tyre as its new prince.
THAISA (20s at the start of the play, late 30s at its end). Devoted daughter, charming princess, and loving wife, Thaisa has a lively wit and a playful spirit, as well as a generous heart and strong will. Thaisa easily commands the room full of suitors gathered to celebrate her birthday. She maintains her public poise even as she finds herself ever more drawn to Pericles. She is a woman with a full capacity for love, a capacity that overflows when she is finally reunited with her husband and daughter. Especially interested in actors who sing in this role.
ANTIOCHUS’DAUGHTER/LYCHORIDA (20s). A magnetic and captivating presence, Antiochus’s DAUGHTER lies happily in her father’s incestuous sheets as prince after prince dies in pursuit of her hand. Still, her shell cracks upon seeing Pericles whom she hopes will win her. LYCHORIDA is Marina’s nurse. Warm and caring, she looks after Marina and helps Pericles after Thaisa’s presumed death. Especially interested in actors who sing in this role
ANTIOCHUS/CERIMON (40s-50s) Antiochus is the king of Antioch, a ruler who seems to be pleasant and generous and but is revealed to be villainous and base. Happily ensconced in an incestuous relationship with his daughter, he thinks nothing of murdering any who learn his secret and threaten his security. Powerful, proud, and cunning. Wise, generous, and a gentle soul, CERIMON is a nobleman of Ephesus who recovers and heals Thaisa after her presumed death and installs her as a votaress to Diana.
