BREAKDOWN
[SELMA MAE]
Late 30s-Early 40s. Female. Irish. Selma Mae has the perfect husband, perfect kids, and perfect home… or so it appears to friends and family. Constantly living in the shadow of her social-climbing mother, Selma can only keep up appearances for so long. Strong comedy skills and an Irish dialect required.
[CARMEL]
60s. Female. Irish. Selma’s mother. Impeccably dressed. Tall. Overbearing. Carmel goes above and beyond to try to make her daughter happy, but doesn’t realize that her efforts are more harmful than helpful. Appearances are very important to her. Carmel a taste for the finer things in life… including an abundance of adult beverages, and would never, ever, choose hummus over a canape. Strong comedy skills and an Irish dialect required.
[CHLOE]
Late 30s-Early 40s. Female. Irish. Selma’s neighbor. Glamorous, posh, and feminine… and seemingly everything Selma Mae and Maeve are not. From the outside, Chloe’s life is easy, fabulous, and extravagant. A taste for the finer things in life, along with every food allergy she’s proud to declare. Chloe loves beautiful clothing, gossip, and white wine. Strong comedy skills and an Irish dialect required.
[MAEVE]
Late 30s-Early 40s. Female. Irish. Selma’s sister. A career-woman. Glamorous but tough. She meets the world with her fists up. Maeve is not afraid to speak her mind and makes it clear if someone rubs her the wrong way. Maeve is no-nonsense and has a biting, dry sense of humor. Strong comedy skills and an Irish dialect required.
[BERNIE]
Late 30s-Early 40s. Female. Irish. Selma’s new friend. Sturdy looking and eccentric, she’s obsessive/compulsive, especially when it comes to germs. Bernie will bring her own food and utensils to your party, thank you very much. She has very little sense of social cues and couldn't care less about fashion or small talk. Think Melissa McCarthy in ‘Bridesmaids’… but Irish. Strong comedy skills and an Irish dialect required.
Story line: Selma Mae has a perfect husband, perfect kids, a perfect home…or so it appears to friends and family. But when her social-climbing mother, Carmel, ‘helpfully’ organizes a bash to celebrate her new state-of-the-art kitchen extension, Selma begins to wonder whose life she’s living after all. As the odd assortment of guests begin to assemble--glamorous neighbor Chloe, career-girl sister Maeve, and the eccentric Bernie--it becomes obvious that Carmel’s dream of an elegant ‘do’ is fast descending into chaos. The night unfolds, old secrets are shared and facades begin to crack. The ladies are forced to recognize that behind the gloss, true friendship proves the only solid foundation.
