Maxine Faulk
Female: 40s, Proprietor the Costa Verde Hotel. Very independent. She’s a living definition of nature: lusty, rapacious, guileless, unsentimental. Everything about her should have the openness and freedom of the sea. her attitudes are free and relaxed. Sensual, direct, and practical, unashamed of her sexual life.
Reverend Lawrence Shannon
Male: 30s-40s, a de-frocked Episcopalian minister working for Blake Tours as a guide in Mexico and is miserable doing it. Irresponsible, weak and occasionally cruel he is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Unable to stay away from alcohol and sex. A man who is very much concerned with what is going on in society yet he is not a morally admirable person, His great redeeming virtue is that he has a true and social conscience.
Hannah Jelkes
Female: 30s-40s, a middle aged, spinster, travelling artist, very modest, laid back, calm, understanding, and sympathetic. Emotionally stable and knows what she wants in the world. Otherworldly, genteel, and deeply compassionate, Hannah seems to transcend the unpleasant reality of her situation: She is the caretaker of her aged grandfather, Nonno.
Nonno
(Jonathan Coffin) Male, late 90s. Senile and hard of hearing. Hannah’s grandfather, a world traveler; once a poet of some renown; a member of the New England patriciate; even in extreme old age he retains his courtly manners and sprightly, if dated, wit. Uses a wheelchair and a cane to get around.
Miss Judith Fellowes
Female: 30s-50s, a voice teacher from Texas and member of Shannon’s tour group. Keeps a watchful eye over Charlotte. Notable chiefly for her prudery and insensitivity.

Dir. J. Barry Lewis
1st reh: 3/7/17. Runs: 3/31-4/30

Thomasina Coverly
Female, 18+ to play ages 13 then 16, from early 19th century. Young, impetuous brilliant child of Lord and Lady Croom. Bold, talkative, comfortable around people much older than she. Although a genius, she is still a child, with a delightful sense of innocence, whimsy, fun, curiosity & imagination. Typical 13 (then 16) year old girl, except for fact she is unusually privileged and given unusual educational opportunities. Driven not only by academic zeal but also by desire for sexual knowledge.
Septimus Hodge
Male: 22 then 25, from the early 19th century. Thomasina's charming, witty tutor. An academic, works on his own research while teaching Thomasina. Bit of a rake. Has a very active sexual appetite and lusts after Lady Croom, falls in love with Thomasina, conducts a dalliance with Mrs. Chater right under her husband's nose. Manages to avoid repercussions of his actions by employing his prodigious wit & cunning charm. Perpetually sarcastic and jaded which comes from his serial, cavalier seductions.
Jellaby
Male: 40s. From the early 19th century. Middle-aged opportunistic butler who knows and sees much -even more than he otherwise might because he goes out of his way to be as in-the-know as possible. In course of his day, delivers many letters and messages with a (mostly) well-disguised lack of neutrality. Sly & nosy, it's his business to be cognizant of everything that is going on around him and to report it to his employers, as well as gossip about it with his colleagues.
Richard Noakes
Male: 40s. From the early 19th century. Middle-aged self-important landscape gardener. Even more of a gossip & busybody than Jellaby, insinuating himself upon the lives of the people on the estate, spying on them, spreading word of their deeds. Excels at frustrating Lady Croom.
Ezra Chater
Male: 30s. From the early 19th century. Lives on estate of Lord and Lady Croom under their sponsorship. Bombastic, ambitious buffoon. Terribly untalented and silly aspiring poet & poor amateur biologist. Blatantly being cuckolded by his flagrantly faithless wife; does everything in the world to excuse her behavior as somehow acceptable. Fancies himself chivalrous; tries to be indignant when he finds people cheating on his wife, but is easily persuaded of any silly story to excuse her behavior -especially those in which his ego is flattered. Distinctly mediocre at everything he puts his mind to.
Lady Croom
Female: 30s. From the early 19th century. Thomasina's mother; force to be reckoned with. Perceptive; aware of everything happening on the property. Can be stern & demanding, even a bit of a battle-ax - but can also turn on the charm when she wants to. Not intellectual or well-read, but observant and has some ability to turn a witty phrase, even if not extensively educated. Often flirtatious and can be sexually competitive. Entertains a number of suitors, but generally does so with some amount of discretion. Relatively strict if somewhat detached mother to Thomasina
Capt. Brice
Male: 30s-40s. From the early 19th century. Brother of Lady Croom. Sea captain in the Royal Navy. Lives at the estate. Has also fallen under the spell of the amorous Mrs. Chater. Elegant, charming, an accomplished soldier, adventurer and adulterer.
Hannah Jarvis
Female: late 30s. From present day. Acts as voice of reason. Pragmatic, no-nonsense academic, feminist researcher who has all but rejected any notion of romantic knowledge in favor of intellectual work. Hard worker and sometimes slow thinker, but this methodical, thorough thinking that is also her greatest strength. Can be blunt, and cares little for social decorum and dislikes sentimentality. Appears reserved because she is socially inept, not because of any social calculation. Her life is her work, and has given up any notion that she could have a social or romantic life outside of it.
Chloe Coverly
Female: 18 years old. From present day. A modern-day, adventurous, precocious version of Thomasina: creative and imaginative thinker, but lacks discipline of thought that Septimus trained into Thomasina. Like Thomasina, possesses a curious, perceptive and brilliant mind, but lacks the education to have Thomasina's genius. Has become wrapped up in a world of status and parties, and though she finds it tiresome at times, navigates it well.
Bernard Nightingale
Male: late 30’s. From present day. Rather foppish academic, writer and don, whose field is literature of the early 19th century. Flamboyant, larger-than-life, competitive and opportunistic; a man just waiting to become famous -- though he doesn’t want to work for it. Warm & charismatic and charming in the kind of way people of integrity learn not to trust. Specializes in life and work of Lord Byron. Disregards truth in order to prove his theory that Lord Byron killed Ezra Chater, which comes from his lust for fame & recognition.
Valentine Coverly
Male: 20s-30s. From present day. Son of the Coverly estate; an eternal student. Supposedly a graduate student in mathematics at Oxford, but appears that he has been so for an exceedingly long time and it seems his more primary occupation may be “man of leisure”. Developed the coping mechanisms of the elite: sarcasm and snark; has an unrequited crush on Hannah Jarvis.
Augustus Coverly /Gus Coverly
Male 18+ to play 15. Augustus is from the early 19th century. Only appears in one scene as Thomasina's entitled, unruly young brother who wants Septimus to tell him about sex. Gus is in present day. Painfully shy mute, but serves as a connector and communicator between past and present; There are suspicions that Gus may be a genius. His silence allows him to notice things that others do not.
