BREAKDOWN
SUPERSTITIONS, by Emily Zemba
Directed by Kelly Kerwin
GRIEG, male or non-binary, 30s. Grieg is a foreigner from an unknown country. Speaks with an unidentifiable accent. Grieg is wise, kind, and has a sense of humor about the world.
NEREIDA, female, POC, 30s. A realtor, Nereida has always been sharp, rational, no-nonsense. She’s always managed to keep her anxieties at bay... until very recently. At the top of the play she has begun to be affected by the uncertainty and unsettledness of the world around her. She’s married to Henry.
OLDER, 30s to 60s, a street-wise person worn down from years of never making it to the top. YOUNGER, a young person (think Gen Z) beginning to question the world. Smarter than all of us.
JANE, female, 20s/early 30s, a bit anxious, a bit naive, a bit waspy. In a relationship with Michael. We all know a Jane. She’s passionate, but uninformed.
MICHAEL, male, 20s/early 30s, a bit controlling, a bit naive, a bit waspy. In a relationship with Jane. They’re quite a pair.
HENRY/ Doubled with MAN-IN-THE-WALL, male, 30s. Henry is a hard-worker, finally feeling beaten down by the system. Recently (and secretly) unemployed. Married to Nereida.
SILDAT, female or non-binary, 30s. Sildat is an optimist, a lover. Sildat and Grieg are in a relationship and from the same place... though we don’t know that until the end of the play, and Sildat does not have a trace of an accent when we first meet them. When Sildat and Grieg are together, they speak their own language.
