Please prepare a contemporary monologue, 2 minutes or less. Comedic is better, but dramatic is fine.

New play about love and politics in contemporary Beijing. When Malcolm, an American lost soul, comes to Beijing at the invitation of his college friend David, a Chinese native, he soon embarks on a relationship with a local woman named Xiao Mei. As his eyes are opened to subtle social, economic and political forces at work around him, Malcolm struggles with the fate of his relationships and his future.

Seeking (all roles are available):

Malcolm:

American, early - mid 20s. Slightly bumbling, self-deprecating and socially insecure loner, living in China for the first time.

Xiao Mei:

Chinese woman, early - mid 20s. Strikingly beautiful. From the countryside; now living a highly cosmopolitan life in Beijing. PROFICIENT IN MANDARIN, her first language, but trying to learn English and expand her horizons and opportunities in order to distance herself from her country past and from her former self. MUST SPEAK MANDARIN PROFICIENTLY to be considered for this role.

Da Wei “David” Wang:

Chinese man, early - mid 20s. Entrepreneur. Studied at Stanford and speaks ENGLISH AND MANDARIN PROFICIENTLY. Charming, macho, Wall Street banker-type. Has a take-no-prisoners attitude in his business dealings, to make the most of China’s financial boom. MUST SPEAK MANDARIN PROFICIENTLY to be considered for this role.

Samanya:

African woman, early - mid 20s. Expatriate trust-fund baby and club-kid; grew up in Beijing without rules. Cosmopolitan and glamorous, with both the confidence and the insecurity of a life-long outsider. SPEAKS SOME MANDARIN. ACTRESS MUST HAVE A GOOD EAR, AND BE ABLE TO LEARN SOME MANDARIN PHRASES.
