SEEKING
A company of versatile actor/ singers, whose ethnic diversity reflects contemporary NYC, who possess strong movement skills and outstanding musicianship, to portray the roles in ONE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND ONE DAY (see breakdown).
PREPARATION
Actors should come prepared to sing a brief musical theater selection from their repertoire, and may be asked to vocally improvise in the style of the show, in an exercise led by the music director and composer. (Visit www.marisamichelson.com for more information on the composer’s work.)

BREAKDOWN
Synopsis:
This is the world premiere production of the new musical One Thousand Nights and One Day, based on Jason Grote's critically-acclaimed play, 1001. This kaleidoscopic reinvention of The Arabian Nights wraps stories within stories, deconstructing and examining narrative, the Middle East and identity through the modern-day love story of Alan and Dahna, a Jewish man and a Palestinian woman, who are graduate students living in contemporary NYC.
SEEKING: A company of versatile actor/ singers, whose ethnic diversity reflects contemporary NYC, who possess strong movement skills and outstanding musicianship, to portray the following roles:
DAHNA / SCHEHERAZADE – Female. 25-35. A role moving between the mythical Persian storyteller, and a contemporary New Yorker raised in Brooklyn after her parents immigrated from Palestine. Scheherazade is a brilliant and self-possessed woman, saving the kingdom with her ability to weave tales; she has a grounded and powerful sexuality. Dahna is a brilliant and self-possessed Columbia graduate student, thoughtfully grappling with pressure from her family, a kind-yet-imperfect boyfriend, and a romantic dilemma that forces her to make a difficult choice. Actor should handle elevated language with ease, and be able to access a deep emotional reserve of both fierce strength and great vulnerability. Seeking a strong mover, as there will be light choreography. Mezzo-soprano with wide range and strong musicianship. An advanced singer with intuitive energetic awareness and a playful sense of invention. Strong classical ability from C4 to A5. Contemporary musical theater ability from G3 to E5.
ALAN / SHAHRIYAR - Male. Late 20s – 30s. Alan is a well-intentioned, Jewish-American intellectual who wants to please those around him. After a violent incident, he becomes trapped within the labyrinth of his own mind, and throughout the play is struggling to piece his world back together. This actor also plays the tyrannical Persian King Shahriyar, who marries Scheherazade, and eventually falls in love with her, through her story-telling prowess. Actor should handle elevated language with ease. Baritenor.
THE ONE-EYED ARAB & OTHERS - Male, 40s-50s, any ethnicity. At times our narrator. Must be a versatile comic with tremendous acting range. Also plays MOSTAFA, a Palestinian man, and others as cast. Baritenor.
DUNYAZADE / LUBNA & OTHERS - Female, 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. Precocious little sister of Scheherazade/Dahna, and others as cast. Mezzo with strong character acting ability and sense of comedy. Role requires ability to handle patter.
ASSER & OTHERS - Male, 20s - 30s, any ethnicity. ASSER is an international banker who begins an online, arranged relationship with Dahna. Must have a strong sense of comedy with versatile acting ability. Also plays YAHYA AL-HUSAYNI, and other roles as cast. Baritenor.
THE VIRGIN BRIDE & OTHERS - Female, 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. Must have a strong sense of comedy with versatile acting ability. Also plays THE PRINCESS MARIDAH, and others as cast. Comic soprano – role requires ability to sing lengthy phrases with fluidity.
WAZIR & OTHERS - Male, 30s - 40s, any ethnicity. A strong, intelligent, sometimes intimidating man. Plays WAZIR, an adviser to Shahriyar, the DJINN, and others as cast. Tenor.
