PANAMA JONES - (45-60) A charismatic African-American nightclub Mistress Of Ceremonies, alternately classy and bawdy, with an ironic sense of humor and hard-won worldly wisdom. Has a thrilling multi-octave voice. A true “FORCE OF NATURE” star turn. The story is told through her eyes.
RICK ANDERSON - (30-35) Tess's latest fascination. A charismatic, stunningly handsome aspiring singer. Late 1940’s big-band-style vocals.
MEREDITH ALLEN - (35-45) Stylish and gorgeous best friend of Tess. Damaged goods, she's sardonic, cold and a bit ruthless. Killer belt voice.
EDDIE PARSONS - (25-32) Goofy-handsome, brilliant solo tap dancer with a naïve, small-town outlook. He's hopelessly in love with Kitty McVey. Solid vocals as well. A true triple threat. Sings and dances the title number.
KITTY McVEY - (24-34) A voluptuous, leggy, stop-traffic knockout performer; a potential star who sells herself short. She covers her insecurities with an aggressive sexuality. Rita Hayworth looks with Marilyn Monroe vulnerability. Exciting belt voice to the C above middle C.
JACKIE JAMES NELSON - (22-32) A beautiful African-American nightclub performer, with a checkered past and a sharp tongue. Niece of Panama Jones and married to fellow performer Keith Nelson. A young Lena Horne with a breathtaking voice, some dancing.
KEITH NELSON - (24-34) A handsome African-American singer and spectacular dancer (Think Hinton Battle or Greg Burge). A compulsive gambler and happy-go-lucky to a fault. Winning sense of humor with a strong, clear bari-tenor voice.
DUKE SULLIVAN - (50-62) Tough, roughly handsome nightclub owner, Jimmy Cagney type. An Irish mobster insecure with women, whom he treats badly. Non-singing role.
ETHEL THE CIGARETTE GIRL - (28) Bright, bawdy and hilariously funny cigarette girl and aspiring singer. A young Bette Midler crossed with Martha Raye; infatuated with Eddie Parsons. Huge belt voice, Jazz/scat singing a plus. Any ethnicity.
DETECTIVE LARRETA - (30-35) A dirty cop, seemingly helpful and benevolent but a dangerous mob plant.
JOE, THE BARTENDER – (25 – 40) A handsome-ish, not too bright lug who quietly does his job. Or IS he?
