BREAKDOWN

Gabey: Ages 22 – 35. Baritone Gabey is one of three sailors on shore leave, and the one most prone to being a romantic. He is the most worldly of all of them and has performed some heroic deeds on his ship. Gabey falls in love with the ideal of a woman he sees on a poster of “Miss Turnstiles“(Ivy Smith) and spends the remainder of the show pursuing her. Strong dance abilities required.

Ozzie: Ages 22-32. Character Baritone Ozzie is one of the other sailors on shore leave in the city. Ozzie feels a tremendous loyalty to Gabey, Ozzie should be able to present himself as a relatively big and strong person (in one scene he is said to resemble a statue of a prehistoric man in the Natural History Museum). Ozzie’s love interest is Claire de Loone, a budding anthropologist. Strong movement abilities? strong comic actor.

Chip: Ages 18-30. Baritone Chip is another one of the sailors on leave. Of the three, he is the most naive and the one least interested in meeting a girl for a fling during his day in the City (though he is not completely uninterested). He wants to see the sights of New York City so he can tell his Dad all about them, as is made clear in his duet with Hildy, “Come Up To My Place.” Strong comic actor.

Claire: Ages 22 – 32. Legit Soprano Claire de Loone is a self-described “cold-blooded scientist,” an anthropologist to be precise, who cannot control her impulses. She is engaged in the study of prehistoric man in order to control those impulses. The actress portraying Claire must have a strong singing voice and great comic timing. Although she is engaged to be married to Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework, Claire’s love interest is Ozzie. Strong comic actress and strong dancer as well.

Hildy: Ages 20 – 34. Mezzo-soprano/Belter. Hildy is a cab driver who is desperately hungry for a man. She shares an apartment with Lucy Schmeeler, wherein one girl lives in the apartment 12 hours a day while the other is working. Hildy meets Chip when he is looking for a cab and then spends much of the rest of the show trying to seduce him. Very strong comic actress.

Ivy: Ages: 22 – 32. Mezzo-soprano Ivy Smith is “Miss Turnstiles,” and she is by turns an innocent as well as someone who is willing to fight to get ahead in her career. At heart, though, she is a romantic. Her love interest is Gabey. Very strong dancer, as the role is primarily dance.

Madame Dilly: Ages 40 – 60. Mezzo-soprano/Contralto Madame Dilly is Ivy’s singing teacher and very much a lush. She provides comic relief and is a bit of a conniver. Strong comedic actress.

Judge Pitkin: Ages 35 – 65. Bass Judge Pitkin is engaged to Claire de Loone. He is a bit too understanding of Claire’s problems with men and very overblown. Dignified, with great comedic timing.

Lucy Schmeeler: Hildy’s roommate. She has a terrible cold and provides comic relief. Strong comedic actor, non-singing role.

**** Please Note: There are up to 20 additional characters within this show. All ensemble will be playing multiple roles, and should be versatile actors as well as strong dancers and/or singers. We will be using a mixture of “singers who move well”, “triple-threats”, and “dancers who sing.” **
