An electrifying world premiere musical comedy inspired by the songs of one of pop music’s most beloved bands. Mainstays on the Chicago dive bar circuit, Bobby and his band are hustling for their big break. But after their latest rejection, Bobby decides it’s “Hip to Be Square,” trades in his guitar, and starts “Workin’ for a Livin’” in corporate America. Now instead of hunting record deals, Bobby’s closing business deals and searching for the girl of his dreams. But when his bandmates reach out to play one last gig, will Bobby take one last crack at rock-and-roll glory, or risk it all for “The Power of Love”? Celebrate the classic songs of Huey Lewis and the News in this hilarious musical.
Roles will be understudied. Available roles:
BOBBY - 30, male lead. Former lead singer of THE LOOP -- a one-time rockin' band on Chicago's music scene -- turned company man. Passionate, reckless and impulsive. With his tattooed arms covered by his business suits, he's a blue- collar, city guy striving to be blue-blooded in the 'burbs of Milwaukee. ROLE IS CAST
CASSANDRA - 30, female lead. Smart, disciplined, rational and her Father's loyal lieutenant in their family box making business. Still reeling from her break-up with long-term boyfriend, Tucker, she's taken her angst and put it fully into her work. ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED
ROZ: 40's, Southern-tough, no-nonsense, seen it all. She's the kind of truth-telling, impervious-to-BS woman who could only work in Human Resources. ROLE IS CAST
ELI - 30, the thoughtful, eternally optimistic, de-facto leader of the band and its drummer/keyboards/sax player. He keeps the other guys in line, and puts out their many (literal) fires to keep them on the road to a record deal. ROLE IS CAST
GLENN - 30, sarcastic, pessimist, full of piss and vinegar who plays - what else - bass for The Loop. He's never forgiven Bobby for leaving the band two years ago... and can't comprehend how he's turned in his rock n' roll bona fides for a business suit. ROLE IS CAST
JJ - 30, laid-back, good-time, go with the flow lead guitarist for The Loop. He just wants things to be cool and is nostalgic for the days when The Loop were just four kids from the neighborhood playing music and having fun. ROLE IS CAST
STONE - 50's, is Cassandra's Father and Bobby's boss. He's an upper-middle class suburban success who loves his work and embraces his quirk. His enthusiasm for selling cardboard boxes would make Ron Popeil blush. The only thing he cares about more than his company is his daughter. ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED
PAIGE - 30, is Cassandra's outspoken, fiery, down-for-whatever best friend since grade school and Stone Inc.'s publicist. She yearns for a more exciting life than the one she has in Milwaukee and is determined to use her and Cassandra's weekend in Chicago (for the Great Lakes Shipping Convention) as a means to get one. ROLE IS CAST
FJORD - 40's, is a mad genius, armchair psychologist, with an accent you just can't place. Came to America to find a better life and found it as the CEO of a mid-sized online retailer (with a great need for cardboard boxes.) A consummate businessman, he'll go to any length to ensure the most favorable deals for his company. ROLE IS CAST.
TUCKER: 30s, All-American alpha with a good portfolio, great hair and the ego that comes with. Dated Cassandra through grad school, moved to Chicago with her afterwards, broke her heart to find himself. Now, two years later, he HAS found himself -- and he realizes breaking up with her is the biggest mistake of his life (besides going long on Groupon). ROLE IS CAST
NINA NAZOFF: 50s, a no frills, tough love A&R rep and music biz legend who can make or break a band on a whim. She's given her life to rock n' roll, and inspires awe and fear in musicians everywhere. But if she thinks you've got it -- and honey, she'll sure as shit tell you if she doesn't -- then your dreams really can come true. ROLE IS CAST.

Donald and his wife Marvelous have been living the American Dream since emigrating from Zimbabwe nearly three decades ago. They have a beautiful house and impressive careers, and now one of their daughters is getting married! But when the bride insists on a traditional African wedding ceremony, tensions start to rise. Throw in an eccentric aunt from the old country and a bewildered bridegroom, and soon it’s not certain the couple will ever make it down the aisle. Familiar, from Tony Award nominee Danai Gurira (Black Panther, “The Walking Dead,” Eclipsed), takes a funny, warmhearted look at tradition, marriage, and what it means to be an American family. The New York Times calls it “an engrossing, fiercely funny comedy–drama that probes with subtlety and smarts.”
Roles will not be understudied. Available Roles.
MARVELOUS CHINYARAMWIRA:
50s-60s. An African matriarch who runs the perfect American home. She and her husband DONALD live in a upper-middle class suburb of Minneapolis. She holds a PhD and is the department chair of a university’s biochemistry department currently studying DNA and inheritance. She is poised, sophisticated and purposed, very driven by decorum and propriety, but conveniently and blissfully unaware of her own potent capabilities in impropriety when sufficiently provoked.
DONALD CHINYARAMWIRA:
50s-60s. An African man. MARVELOUS’ husband, and a partner in a law firm with his daughter TENDIKAYI. He is a gentle, distinguished man. While he seems quieter than the ladies in the house, he is, we learn, no less passionate. He loves his squash and football.
TENDIKAYI:
(Tendi for short). Mid-30s. American-Zimbabwean woman. First generation American. CHRIS's fiancé, MARVELOUS and DONALD’s oldest daughter. Devout Christian. Lawyer in a firm with her father. Struggling to come to terms with her heritage. Elects to observe a traditional Zimbabwean wedding ritual but is using church friends, instead of her family, as bridesmaids.
ANNIE:
60s. An African woman. MARVELOUS’ older sister. Works as a nurse in Zimbabwe, but due to Zim’s economic downturn, is totally broke. Skeptical of American culture and zealous about preserving Zimbabwean customs. Unabashedly loud with her divisive and volatile presence. Equally scheming and truth-telling. The force that disrupts MARVELOUS’ plan for the wedding.
MARGARET MUNYEWA:
Late 40s-50s. An African woman. MARVELOUS’ youngest sister. She is also a PhD and a geology professor, but can’t seem to settle down with tenure. She is a compulsive spender and is very good at hiding a drinking problem. She feels very torn between her American life and her heritage.
NYASHA:
20s. American-Zimbabwean young woman. First generation American. MARVELOUS and DONALD’s youngest daughter and the baby of the family. She is stylish in an Erikah Badu, India Arie type of way, with a funky natural haircut and funky Afrocentric jewelry. She is the epitome of New York artiste –both a singer/songwriter and a feng shui expert.
CHRIS:
30s. A Caucasian American man, TENDIKAYI’s fiancé. He co-founded an international non-profit for human rights, and spends a lot of his time involved with humanitarian aid efforts in South Asia and western Africa. He bends over backwards to show his respect for his fiancé’s family and heritage. He and TENDI are members of an active church group.
BRAD:
20s- 30s. A Caucasian American man, CHRIS’ younger brother. He is in the military, where he worked on conflict resolution. He is a little brash, but also funny and charming. Pretty clueless about Zimbabwean culture and customs. Attracted to and pursuing NYASHA.

Daphne and Ralph are young classics professors who have just made a discovery that’s sure to turn them into academic superstars: an ancient Greek manuscript of incalculable value. But clumsy Daphne has managed to misplace it, and if she doesn’t find it soon, her career hopes will come crashing down. Despairing, she cries out, “Save me, gods of ancient Greece!”…and the gods actually appear! The Ivy League will never be the same as a pair of screwball deities encounters the carnal complexity of college coeds, campus capers, and conspicuous consumption. A world premiere American musical about family, loyalty, and the magic of Christmas from country music legend Clint Black, inspired by his 1995 chart-topping holiday album. Amid the commotion of the holidays, Staff Sergeant Mike Randolf returns from Afghanistan and home to his family. But before Mike can open his heart to the joy and spirit of the season, he must make peace with the past and let go the ghosts of the battlefield. While Mike’s wife helps him readjust to civilian life, it’s their precocious young daughter’s sweet search for the true meaning of Christmas that leads the family toward healing. This heartwarming musical is sure to become an enduring holiday classic.
Roles will be understudied. Employment in this production is contingent upon clearing a criminal background check. Available roles:
Staff Sergeant Mike Randolf (late 20s/early 30s, high country tenor)
68W10 SOCM, Special Operations Combat Medic (aka Whiskey)
An experienced combat medic, he returns home from Afghanistan and has trouble integrating back into civilian life. He loves his daughter and wife, but is haunted by the ghost of his best friend and the battlefield, and is not sure how to be the husband and father figure that is expected of him, especially during the holidays.
Jessie Randolf (late 20s/early 30s, country/folk soprano, with belt)
A pragmatic and to the point presence, she shows her care and love in the small details,
but isn’t sure how to broach the gap caused by Mike’s distance after his return home, when their old version of “normal” isn’t what it used to be.
Jessica Randolf (9 years old, with belt)
Precocious and forthright, she’s 9 going on 30. She is genuinely exploring what thre reall meaning of Christmas is, and through her journey of discovery connects with her father and helps bring him really home.
Corporal Douglas (Doug) Miller (mid/late 20s, country/rock high baritone)
Doug and Mike are best friends in the field and back home. Funny, charmingly goofy and optimistic about the future, his unexpected death in Afghanistan is the trigger for Mike’s questioning of life and duty, and his presence once Mike is home looms as the catalyst for either deeper trauma or change.
Alissa Miller (late 20s, country/folk mezzo/soprano, belter)
The consummate army wife, she and Doug are passionately in love - she both understands, tolerates, and appreciates his every sunshiny disposition and optimism. Her struggle and ultimate coming to terms with the loss of Doug helps Mike to process his own loss, sense of duty, and the importance of family.
Ensemble Adults (2 Men, 2 women, SATB) to play:
Lt. Donnell (squad leader in Afghanistan) (late 30s, 40s) no nonsense, experienced squad commander whose decision to stay in the square may or may not have compromised Mike and Doug’s squad.
Mrs. Ferguson (church children's pageant coordinator) (30s/40s) The harried and somewhat stage-mother-like coordinator the church pageant. Definitely a character.
Santa The big guy in red.
The Watsons, Bill and Jennifer (late 20s-early 30s) Civilian neighbors of The Randolfs and Millers. Consummate suburban 9-5 types.
The Peters, Jack and Elizabeth (late 20s-early 30s) Civilian neighbors of The Randolfs and Millers. Not completely out of touch with the military experience.
Ensemble Kids: 4 total, to play:
Jimmy (in the Christmas Pageant as the “Star”) (9-11, boy soprano) The “star” of the pageant, has trouble memorizing his lines. A little precocious, and a little cute/dopey at the same time.
Billy and Joanie Watson (brother and sister, and the other Wise Men) (9-11) The Watson kids, typically much hipper and with it than their parents.
Melissa Peters, the shepherd (11-12) The peacemaker of the group, a cool head on her shoulders.
Santa's Helpers (various ensemble) Elves, and reindeer and dancing bears, oh my.
Ensemble adults also play the squad members in Afghanistan, and various non-speaking others throughout.

Directed by Giovanna Sardelli

In 1960 the famed “Mercury Seven” trained at NASA to become the first American astronauts. But they weren’t alone. Thirteen women also underwent the same rigorous psychological and physical testing. The first woman to be tested, Jerrie Cobb, even out-performed her male counterparts. But while Alan Shepard and John Glenn went on to become household names, Ms. Cobb never got that chance. In vividly theatrical terms, the world premiere of They Promised Her the Moon tells the unknown true story of this exceptional and unjustly overlooked woman—skilled aviator, world-record-holding pilot, successful business executive—and the powerful forces that kept her from reaching orbit.
Roles will not be understudied. Available Roles.
JERRIE COBB is a world record holding pilot and almost the first woman in space. Actress will play Jerrie from 7 – 50. Jerrie as a little girl with a speech impediment in an Oklahoma cornfield, to her journey to be the first female tested as part of the Mercury 13, to a disillusioned woman living in the Amazon. Jerrie is fierce; she’s a tomboy with a passion for flying. She’s constantly navigating her way through the unknown to continue to fly. There are many lines in the play that talk about the scientific benefit to her slight build.
JACKIE COCHRAN a pioneer of American aviation, considered to be one of the most gifted racing pilots of her generation. She is cocky, confident and uses her sexuality as a weapon. She began flying so that she could distribute cosmetics from her very successful company. She is a player and she has the wealth and confidence to be playing in the big leagues. She’s not a woman’s woman and she isn’t happy sharing the spotlight with anyone else.
DR RANDY LOVELACE - chairman of the Special Committee on the Life Sciences for Project Mercury, the US astronaut program. He is passionate about the space program and about the science that makes the program possible. He depends upon Jackie’s funding so there is an inherent tension in their relationship. He finds himself in the middle of the relationship between Jackie and Jerrie and walks a tightrope between them. Actor also plays a Southern Congressman who is against including women in the space program.
HELENA COBB is Jerrie’s mother. Her father was a Congressman from Oklahoma so she always feels a little like she married beneath her. She is deeply religious and endlessly confused by her daughter and concerned by the path she’s chosen. Also plays Mrs.White, Jerrie’s put upon 1st grade teacher in Oklahoma, a female reporter smitten with John Glenn and other various roles including a BBC reporter.
HARVEY COBB is Jerrie’s father and also a pilot. He probably hasn’t had the success he thought he world and he turns to the bottle to ease that pain. He deeply loves his daughter and believes in her and supports her – which makes his marriage difficult. He has a big heart and a bit of broken soul. Also plays Congressman Anfuso, chairman of the Special Committee on the Life Sciences for Project Mercury, the US astronaut program. He was a NY Italian Democratic Senator representing New York. He was a bit of a pit-bull and fiercely supportive of the program to put a woman in space. Actor also plays Circus Bob, a slightly skeevy proprietor of a circus, and many reporters and other small roles. A facility with dialects would be helpful – NY, Oklahoma, Russian….
JACK FORD A pilot and owner of Fleetway International. He is a pilot and a daredevil and has the bravado to go along with that. He is charismatic and sexy and pursues Jerrie. He finds himself in the new and uncomfortable position of taking a backseat to her talent and fame. Also plays the small town Mayor, John Glenn – oh that charm, that winning smile and that ability to move through the world with ease and bend people to your will. Also plays reporters and other roles.
