First Rehearsal: July 11, 2023

Performances: July 21-23, 2023

SYNOPSIS: Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. “Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract.” Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space?

ROLES

MEG MURRY, Fierce, headstrong, loving, emotionally messy 13 year-old. She is the beating heart of this show. She feels all her feelings. She is a force. She just doesn't know how to wield her power yet (but soon!). Soprano. THIS ROLE IS PRECAST.

CHARLES WALLACE MURRY, Preternaturally gifted five-year-old. He's smart and he knows it. Deep emotional link to his older sister Meg. (Don't worry about playing age five--in a way, Charles Wallace is ageless and eternal.) High tenor. THIS ROLE IS PRECAST.

CALVIN O’KEEFE, Effortless communicator. Latchkey kid that everyone likes, but no one really knows. In search of home that he finds in the Murrys. Alto.

MOTHER, 40s-50s, Meg, Charles Wallace + The Twins' mother. Brilliant thinker, embraces honesty and uncertainty (because what other choice does she have?).

FATHER, 40s-50s, Meg, Charles Wallace + The Twins' father. Protective, (seemingly) fearless. About to find out he cannot be everything he wants to be for his kids. Baritone/Tenor. THIS ROLE IS PRECAST.

MRS WHATSIT, 30s-40s, the kids' primary guide through this world. Chatty, buoyant, and curious energy. Mezzo.

MRS WHO, 50s, Cultured, cool-as-hell. Speaks largely in quotes. Cool, worldly, radical-mischevious librarian. The sweetest of the three. Kind, jet-setting, cosmopolitan aunt. Soprano.

MRS WHICH, 60s-70s, Oldest of the old souls. NOT to be trifled with. Brassy alto.

MALE-IDENTIFYING CHORUS, Group of 4 tenors, counter-tenors and one bass voice. 3 OF THESE ROLES ARE PRECAST.

FEMALE-IDENTIFYING CHORUS, Group of 4 floaty sopranos and hopefully 1-2 with wide ranges and could move into some alto material as well. 3 OF THESE ROLES ARE PRECAST.

Co-Created by Princess Lockerooo & Harold O’Neal

Book & Lyrics by Princess Lockerooo

Music by Harold O’Neal

First Rehearsal: July 25, 2023

Performances: August 4-6, 2023

SYNOPSIS: After being rejected by his conservative parents, Teddy flees Buffalo and finds refuge and community at the Paradise Ballroom—an underground LGBTQ+ safe-haven in West LA. Surrounded by supporters and mentors, Teddy develops his dancing skills and learns the ways of waacking, but when a shady producer promises fame and success, Teddy turns on his found family and loses his way. A musical about forgiveness, community, and the importance of living one’s truth.

ROLES

TEDDY, 19, from Buffalo New York, is a handsome, talented teenager who dreams of being a famous dancer. He is naturally gifted, a fast learner and possibly a genius but he can be naive, & too trusting and. He hides his sexuality from his religious parents, afraid that if they found out he ways gay, he would be outcast. A huge blowout fight with his parents lead Teddy to spontaneously pack up and move to Hollywood. There he discovers the Paradise Ballroom & Waacking. He adopts a new family that accepts him for who he is. He finds a mother figure in Fanceska, a father figure in Gino and a love interest in Benji. Wide eyed and bunny tailed he gets involved with Maverick, one of Hollywood's most notorious and nefarious show producers. Tedy’s almost instant success in the entertainment business in Hollywood distracts him from realizing that he is being taken advantage of. He is living the “Hollywood dream” and addictions take over. His partnership with Marvrik eventually leads to the destruction of all things he loves.

BENJI is a professional dancer and choreographer, who is known for his soft-spoken and loving personality. He has received classical dance training and is highly regarded for his ability to bring street and club dance to the main stage. With his passion for teaching, Benji cannot resist taking on a new student if he sees talent and potential, as he did with Teddy. Although he is flirtatious and generous, Benji is wary of getting too close to anyone due to past experiences.

FRANCESKA, also known as Madam Garbo, is a young Puerto Rican drag performer who headlines at the Paradise Ballroom. She has a close relationship with her mother, who accepted and loved her without question after she came out at the age of 14. Despite her androgynous appearance, Franceska is often harassed on the streets, making the Paradise Ballroom her only safe place. Despite facing obstacles, Franceska works hard to transition and invests everything she has into it. She acts as a mother figure to Teddy and the other dancers in the show. THIS ROLE IS PRECAST.

LENNY is a free-spirited bohemian who is known for his acrobatic skills and good looks. He was once an orphan runaway and has lived his life freely and recklessly. He is known for his lovemaking and constantly changing partners. In addition to his dancing skills, Lenny also has a passion for poetry, singing, crocheting, and makeup.

GINO is the DJ and the driving force behind the Paradise Ballroom. With his sharp tongue and quick wit. Gino is feared by many for the shade he throws. He is the ultimate gatekeeper of the dance floor, cutting the record if anyone with poor dance moves or attire tries to take center stage. Raised by his homophobic uncle after his parents left him, Gino found solace in music, which he inherited from his father who was also a DJ. Gino serves as the narrator of the show and is the mastermind behind the scene, setting the mood with his carefully curated soundtrack. THIS ROLE IS PRECAST.

ANDY BURROWS is a fashionista and seamster, known for making stunning costumes for the dancers, including Madam Garbo's gowns and wigs. Raised by his grandmother, a religious seamstress, Andy fell in love with fashion through church on Sundays, where his grandmother was known for her extravagant Sunday best outfits. Despite facing opposition from his grandmother, Andy pursued his passion for fashion, only to have everything he made destroyed by her. He then fled to LA to pursue his dreams. THIS ROLE IS PRECAST.

STAR LOVE is a disco superstar. (Combination of Diana Ross & Grace Jones)

MAVERICK is the antagonist in this tale. Initially, he was similar to Teddy – optimistic, skilled, and pure-hearted. However, driven by a desire to hide his true sexuality and feelings for his former teacher, Benji, Maverick became wrathful, avaricious, and consumed by a need to prove his worth to his family and himself through success. He rose to become one of the top producers in LA and convinced investors to purchase the LGBTQ historical landmark, the Circus club. Now rebranded as Mavericks, the club features dancing girls catering to a heterosexual crowd, and Maverick has damaged his relationship with the Paradise dancers and is no longer welcome. He has a shady reputation, known for breaking his promises and making unethical Deals.

THE HARPS, reminiscent of a Motown group like The Supremes, serve as narrators in the story but align with Maverick. They are street-smart women, constantly on the lookout for the next bit of excitement.
