NOTE: The New London Barn Playhouse is an award-winning professional theater now in its 93rd season. As one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country, the Barn is a cultural jewel of northern New England. Housed since 1933 in a centuries-old converted barn with historic landmark status, the theater offers a mix of classic and contemporary musicals and plays performed by seasoned professionals alongside emerging young artists. The organization produces a six-show Mainstage season between Memorial Day and Labor Day each summer, with additional productions including one-night-only cabarets and a Children’s Theater Series throughout the season. The New London Barn Playhouse just recently completed the largest capital campaign in its history. As part of this campaign, a new year-round educational center/rehearsal studio was constructed. The Fleming Center for Artistic Development opened in May 2022 and will allow for the Barn Playhouse’s expansion to 12-month programming to serve as an artistic and educational hub for its community. Additionally, the Fleming Center will also house a brand new Scenic and Costume Shop, as well as a new workspace for the Props department.
Note on COVID-19 vaccinations: New London Barn Playhouse strongly encourages all hired performers to get fully vaccinated prior to the start date of their first rehearsal. The EEOC takes the position that employers can ask employees about vaccination status and to seek proof that they have been vaccinated, such as the vaccination card.
At the New London Barn Playhouse, our organization actively chooses to uplift applicants with diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, sexes, national origins, political affiliations, socio-economic status, veteran and disability status, and other intersectional dimensions of diversity. We are committed to ongoing learning and developing and implementing programs and initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in all areas of employment as well as through our creative process and projects.

DELORIS VAN CARTIER: Black, 25 to 35- Vocal range: E3- F#5. An aspiring performer, trying to find both fame and a place in the world. When forced to hide in the convent, she initially refuses to embrace her new lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir. Loud-mouthed, and sassy, but ultimately caring.
MOTHER SUPERIOR: Any race/ethnicity, 50 to 70 - Vocal range: D3-E5. The head of the convent, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Extremely protective about keeping her sisters away from the outside world, which puts her in direct opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings.
CURTIS: 30s – Vocal range: A2-Ab4. A club owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris's boyfriend. Cocky and controlling, always on the verge of violence.
SISTER MARY MARTIN-OF-TOURS: Any race/ethnicity, 40 to 60. A nun of the convent. Clearly in her own world, but has her moments of surprising clarity.
SISTER MARY THERESA: Any race/ethnicity, 50s+. A nun of the convent, the oldest of the group. Decrepit at a glance, but secretly packs a punch.
SISTER MARY ROBERT: CAST A postulant, abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice. Her wallflower lifestyle has made her live a shell of a life. (Age: 16 to 25- Vocal range: F#3-A5)
SISTER MARY PATRICK: CAST A nun of the convent. Consistently perky, enthusiastic, and easily excitable. (Age: 35 to 50)
SISTER MARY LAZARUS: CAST A nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris's soul music. (Age: 50 to 70- Vocal range: F3-B4)
MONSIGNOR O’HARA: CAST One of the heads of the convent. Constantly concerned with financial matters, though soul music surprisingly puts him in a different mood. (Age: 45 to 60- Vocal range: E3-G4)
EDDIE SOUTHER: CAST The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding. Faces a lot of nerves when under pressure, causing him to sweat profusely. He still yearns for Deloris after all these years, and dreams of being her hero. (Age: 25 to 35- Vocal range: Ab2-B4)
TJ: CAST Curtis's nephew and one of his thugs. Deft and cognizant of the fact, constantly in a state of ignorant bliss. (Age: 16 to 30- Vocal range: Db3-Eb5)
JOEY: CAST One of Curtis's thugs. Believes himself to be quite the ladies' man. (Age: 30 to 40- Vocal range: Bb2-Eb5)

MARY POPPINS: Jane and Michael Banks's new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet particular, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. A mezzo soprano with strong top notes and is able to move well. She can have a more traditional soprano sound, but precision and diction is the key. (20s-30s - Vocal range: Gb3- C6)
BERT: The narrator of the story, is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man. (20s-30s - Vocal range: B2-F#4)
GEORGE BANKS: The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding precision and order in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn't have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew. His emotional armor, however, conceals a sensitive soul. A baritone, George may speak-sing as necessary. (40 to 45- Vocal range: Bb2- Eb4)
WINIFRED BANKS: George's wife and Jane and Michael's mother. A former actress, she is loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband's desire to only associate with the best people as well as be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she's not up to the job of being Mrs. Banks, yet, she is, and more. She has great warmth and simplicity to her tone. (30 to 35- Vocal range: A3-D5)
ADMIRAL BOOM: A retired Royal Navy man and neighbor of the Banks family. A physically large man with a loud and booming voice, he speaks in Navy jargon and has a soft spot for his neighbor, Miss Lark. Can be any vocal range as needed. If Admiral Boom doubles as the Banks Chairman, he can be a baritone. (50s)
MRS. BRILL: The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harassed, she's always complaining that the house is understaffed. Her intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. Mrs. Brill doesn't have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. She does not have to be a strong singer. (50s - Vocal range: F#3- D#5)
BIRD WOMAN: Covered in a patchwork of old shawls, and her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs to passersby, who ignore her as if she doesn't exist. Sings Feed the Birds. There can be a gruff, folksy quality to her voice that reflects the hardness of her life. (50s - Vocal range: Gb3- C5)
MRS. CORRY: Owns a magical gingerbread shop. She is a mysterious woman of great age who speaks with a Caribbean accent (or any accent that would make her seem exotic). (40s)
MISS ANDREW: George's overbearing and scary nanny. With her bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things - her way. A soprano with an alto belt, there can be some heaviness to her voice along with range. (40s)
JANE: CAST The high-spirited daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Banks, is bright and precocious but can be willful and inclined to snobbishness. (Age: 11 to 12- Vocal range: A3- F#5)
MICHAEL: CAST The cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents. (Age: 9 to 10- Vocal range: A3-E5)
KATIE NANNA: CAST Jane and Michael’s nanny at the beginning of the show. Overwhelmed and upset, she has absolutely had her fill of the Banks children. (30s)
POLICEMAN: CAST A neighborhood fixture who is respected by and observant of households on his beat. (30s)
MISS LARK: CAST The haughty next-door neighbor of the Banks family who treats her dog, Willoughby, as if he were a child. (30 to 35)
ROBERTSON AY: CAST The houseboy to the Banks family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling, he never gets things right and believes himself to be useless. He doesn't do a lot of singing, but his Spoonful solo can be a fun surprise. (20s - Vocal range: F3- G#4)
PARK KEEPER: CAST Uniformed and officious, he makes sure no one breaks park regulations. His life is defined by rules, but he secretly hankers after his childhood. (40s)

A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends.
EDNA TURNBLAD: 30 to 50 - Vocal range: F3-G5. Tracy's big and blonde mother. She is a working housewife who has lost her confidence and dream to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Often played by a male in drag.
VELMA VON TUSSLE: 45 to 55 - Vocal range: G3-E5. Amber's mother and the director of Corny Collin's show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing.
MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE: Black, female, 40s - Vocal range: F3-E5. Seaweed and Little Inez's mother, she also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collin's Negro Day show. Big, blonde, beautiful and proud of it. She is sassy and confident.

AMBER VON TUSSLE: CAST Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can't dance but is expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always feels the need to be the center of attention. (18+ to play teens - Vocal range: A3-F5)
LINK LARKIN: CAST The star heartthrob on Corny Collins' show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. (18+ to play teens - Vocal range: G3-A5)
