BREAKDOWN

Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre 2025 Season (2nd Half)

WAITRESS

Book by Jessie Nelson
Music & Lyrics by Sara Bareilles
Based upon the motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly
Director/Choreographer: STEPHANIE TORNS
Music Director: KRISTY TEMPLET
Projected First Rehearsal: July 3rd, 2025
Opening: July 17th, 2025
Closing: August 31st, 2025

SEEKING:

JENNA: (Female-presenting, 20s-30s, any ethnicity); A woman stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town. Finds some happiness and expression through her meticulous baking of pies and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky. Lives her life paycheck-to-paycheck, day by day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Has a fantastic pop/rock voice with great range.

DAWN: (Female-presenting, 20s, any ethnicity); She's the youngest of the waitresses. Thick glasses, hair parted 14 centimeters to the left — eccentric is the nice way to say she’s slightly unusual, and not so slightly OCD. She sets the tables, painstakingly ensuring each salt and pepper-shaker is equidistant from the napkin holder. Has an excellent pop/rock/folk voice.

BECKY: (Female-presenting, late 30s-early 50s, African-American); The oldest of the three waitresses. Irreverent, irascible, been there, made it back, and somehow kept her forward and sometimes wicked sense of humor with excellent comedic timing. Has a soulful pop voice with an excellent pop belt.

DR. POMATTER:

(Male-presenting, 30s-early 40s, any ethnicity); Handsome, endearing, and neurotic. Has a warm, if clumsy, matter. Jenna’s gynecologist with whom an unexpected extramarital affair is born. Has a quirky sense of humor and a big heart, despite the fact that he’s contributing to the affair. Has impeccable comedic timing and moves well. Has a very strong pop/rock tenor that can navigate the musical style of Sara Bareilles.

EARL: (Male-presenting, 20s-30s, Caucasian); Jenna’s husband. Peaked in high school, handsome in a gruff way, but that face is clouded with broken dreams, drowned with cheap beer. Just enough narcissism mixed with stupidity, to be a potent Molotov cocktail that can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. Actors auditioning for EARL should come prepared with a song in the vein of Elton John or a similar contemporary singer/songwriter. Guitar playing a big plus.

OGIE: ROLE CAST (Male-presenting, 30s, any ethnicity); Strange, yet oddly lovable. Becomes slightly obsessed with Dawn (in a hilarious yet endearing way) after she goes on a 5-minute date with him. Quirky, incredibly persistent, and odd, yet kind. Has excellent comedic timing and has an excellent pop/rock tenor voice.

JOE: ROLE CAST (Male-presenting, 60s-70s, any ethnicity); The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky, and Cal work. A seemingly old, curmudgeonly man who has a soft spot for Jenna (and her pie), but picks when that warmth allows itself to be shown. A sarcastically funny and no-nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Very funny.

CAL: (Male-presenting, 40s, any ethnicity); A chef at the diner. A “Salt of the Earth” guy’s guy surrounded by gals. Brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming. Has a strong pop/rock voice with great comedic chops. Has a strong contemporary baritone singing voice in the style of Sara Bareilles and has excellent comedic timing.

SAM PHILLIPS/FRANK SINATRA/ENSEMBLE: (Male-presenting, 21-35, Caucasian) Elvis’ first producer. Outspoken, tough but sensitive Southern man. Had a true ear and passion for authentic music, especially “Rockabilly”.

SCOTTY MOORE/GLEN/ENSEMBLE: (Male-presenting, 22-35, Caucasian) Elvis’ first lead guitarist. Comedic.

BILL BLACK/JERRY/ENSEMBLE: (Male-presenting, 18-31, Caucasian) Elvis’ first bass player. The yin to Scotty’s yang. D.J.

FONTANA/RONNIE/ENSEMBLE: (Male-presenting, 18-35, Caucasian) Elvis’ first drummer.

ANN-MARGRET/DIXIE/ENSEMBLE: (Female-presenting, 20-30, Caucasian) Elvis’ co-star on Viva Las Vegas; bubbly Hollywood starlet.

SANDY LESTER: (Female-presenting, 30 – 40, any ethnicity); Michael's ex-girlfriend, now a friend. She’s neurotic, pessimistic, self-deprecating, childish, and easily flummoxed. She makes her anxieties known incredibly loudly and just wants to be happy.

MAX VAN HORN: (Male-presenting, 25 – 35, any ethnicity); A self-obsessed actor with a limited wit. A firm believer in his own hype who can’t imagine anyone not being attracted to him.

JEFF SLATER:

(Male-presenting, 30 – 45, any ethnicity); Michael's roommate. A sardonic realist who lacks the ambition and drive to live up to his potential. The voice of reason swirls just outside the eye of Michael's chaos. Jeff sees the humor of situations and has no reluctance to point out people’s flaws – even his own.

RITA MARSHALL:

(Female-presenting, 50 – 65, any ethnicity); A level-headed producer. Experienced and the voice of sanity and reason in a swirling pool of crazy. She is always a beat ahead of everyone and is very New York.
