An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

The New London Barn Playhouse is an award-winning professional theater now in its 91st season. As one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country, the Barn is a cultural jewel of northern New England. Housed since 1933 in a centuries-old converted barn with historic landmark status, the
theater offers a mix of classic and contemporary musicals and plays performed by seasoned professionals alongside emerging young artists. The organization produces a six-show Mainstage season between Memorial Day and Labor Day each summer, with additional productions including one-night-only cabarets and a Children’s Theater Series throughout the season.
The New London Barn Playhouse just recently completed the largest capital campaign in its history. As part of this campaign, a new year-round educational center/rehearsal studio was constructed. The Fleming Center for Artistic Development opened in May 2022 and will allow for the Barn Playhouse’s expansion to 12 month programming to serve as an artistic and educational hub for its community. Additionally, the Fleming Center will also house a brand new Scenic and Costume Shop, as well as a new workspace for the Props department.

CHIP TOLENTINO: An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. C4 - B5
LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUNENIERRE (SCHWARTZY): Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year. A3 - F5
WILLIAM BARFEE: A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous Magic Foot method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive. E4 - B5
MARCY PARK: A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year's nationals. She speaks six languages, is a member of all-American hockey, a championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the poster child for the Over-Achieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows. She is also not allowed to cry. C4 - E5
THE FOLLOWING ROLES HAVE ALREADY BEEN CAST:
LEAF CONEYBEAR: The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance. A3 - A5
OLIVE OSROVSKY: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms. B3 - F5
RONA LISA PERETTI: The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. B3 - F5
DOUGLAS PANCH: The Vice Principle. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an incident at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in a better place now, thanks to a high fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections.
MITCH MAHONEY: The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort, but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better. E4 - A5

SKY MASTERSON: A high-stakes gambler whose luck never seems to run out, and a wild card who surprises himself when he falls in love with missionary Sarah Brown. Suave, smart, handsome.
ARVIDE ABERNATHY: He is the older, wiser leader of the Salvation Army in Times Square. He is a reasoned old man with a warm heart that harbors only the kindest intentions, even if he tends to be a little gullible. Family to Sarah Brown.
LT. BRANNIGAN: A New York police officer who is on to Nathan’s illegal craps games and is dead set on catching him. A tough, no-nonsense character.
THE FOLLOWIN ROLES HAVE ALREADY BEEN CAST:
NICELY-NICELY JOHNSON: Just like his name suggests, he is the nicest and cheeriest of the gambling crooks. Highspirited and a bit naïve, but sincere and genuine. Nathan’s loyal friend and lackey.
BENNY SOUTHSTREET: Nathan’s right-hand man and a gambler himself. Smart, slick, always moving and shaking, but with what he thinks are Nathan’s best interest at heart.
SARAH BROWN: A pretty, bright-eyed woman who serves as Sergeant of the local Mission. Idealistic, sheltered, and straightlaced, she is passionate about her cause and wishes to convert the gambling sinners to saints. Falls unexpectedly in love with gambler Sky Masterson along the way.
HARRY THE HORSE: A crook and gambler. He is a tough guy with dollar signs as his bottom line. Brings Big Jule into Nathan’s craps game and backs his cheating, but is also a man of his word in the gambling community.
NATHAN DETROIT: A good-hearted gambler and craps game organizer who could never hit the New London Barn Playhouse 2023 Season - Boston, MA EPA Page 4 of 8
bigtime. He loves Adelaide, but cannot quit his gambling ways. A broke schemer with unwitting ways.
MISS ADELAIDE: Nathan’s fiancé and a lead performer at the Hot Box nightclub. She loves Nathan more than anything in the world and desperately wants to get married. Pretty, outspoken, stubborn.
BIG JULE: A big time craps player from Chicago who uses a gun and his own pair of rigged dice to bully his way into never losing. Tough looking. A bit of an oaf.

CAROLE KING: An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music.
DON KIRSCHNER: An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker.
GENIE KLEIN: Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes.
THE FOLLOWING ROLES HAVE ALREADY BEEN CAST:
GERRY GOFFIN: Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more.
BARRY MANN: A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable.
CYNTHIA WEIL: A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likeable.
JANELLE WOODS: A singer that performs one of Carole’s and Gerry’s hits. She and Gerry begin having an affair.
LITTLE EVA: A Babysitter for Carole and Gerry, performs one of Carole’s and Gerry’s hits.

In love with love until Linda leaves him at the altar and breaks his heart. Vocal range: B3-C6
GEORGE: The wedding band's keyboardist and one of Robbie's best friends. He is sensitive and somewhat flamboyant. The foil to Sammy's super guy attitude. Vocal range: C4-A5

SAMMY: The bass player in the wedding band and one of Robbie's best friends. A total guy's guy, but beneath his pretending to love being a bachelor he is actually in love with Holly. Vocal range: C4-A5
JULIA SULLIVAN: Waitress. The pretty girl next door in looks and personality. Engaged to Glen but falls in love with Robbie and is conflicted as to who to choose. Empathetic, caring, and brave. Vocal Range: G3-F5
HOLLY: Julia's cousin. Promiscuous and always up for a good time, but wants to be loved and is looking for romantic fulfillment in all the wrong places. She is in love with Sammy. Vocal range: A3-E5
GLEN GUGLIA: Julia's fiancé. A Wall Street broker. He is rich, shallow, and materialistic. Constantly tries to buy Julia's love with money. He is a bit of a womanizer. Vocal range: D4-B5
ROSIE: Robbie's grandmother who raised him. Motherly but adventurous and always trying to remain hip despite her age. Vocal D4-C5
LINDA: Robbie's fiancé who leaves him at the altar. Keeps Robbie around as a back-up plan. Is more in love with the idea of Robbie being a rock star than she actually is with Robbie. Vocal range: A3-D5
