BREAKDOWN
HOWARD BEALE Cast (Bryan Cranston)
SEEKING:
MAX SCHUMACHER Male, 50s to early 60s, any ethnicity. Manly, handsome, suave and accomplished—heading into the winter of his life. Knows he’s making a mis-take having an affair, and ends up broken because of it.
DIANA Female, 30s, any ethnicity. Self-absorbed, but also aware of her own strength. Brutally honest, a barracuda--in equal parts attractive and repulsive to the audience. Capable of bringing MAX to his knees.
FRANK HACKETT Male, late 20s to mid 30s, any ethnicity. Young and attrac-tive, very ambitious. He’s sharp and aggressive, with a real swagger about him.
ARTHUR JENSEN Male, 60s, any ethnicity. An old-school boss at the net-work. Can communicate intellectual dominance without raising his voice to make himself heard. He has natural power, like a strict father figure.
HARRY HUNTER Male, 20s, any ethnicity. Young, ambitious and capable, but also short-tempered and ironic. Put-upon.
LOUISE SCHUMACHER Female, 50s to early 60s, any ethnicity. Beautiful, strong and stoic. A good partner for Max—we should think he’s crazy for jeopardizing his mar-riage to her.
NELSON CHANEY Male, 50s to 60s, any ethnicity. An old-school TV execu-tive. A bit of a loser, flustered and incompetent—runs the network, but in name only. Can pull rank at the top of the play, but becomes more out of his depth as the story un-folds.
EDWARD RUDDY Male, 60s, any ethnicity. A boss at the network. The oppo-site of his name, there’s something a little infirm about him. A statesman, who garners respect. A kinder, gentler father-figure than Jensen.
JACK SNOWDEN/WARM-UP GUY (also u/s HACKETT) Male, late 20s/mid-30s, any ethnicity. Attractive, a new, fresh face. Capable of being serious as a newsreader and funny as the warm-up guy.
SCHLESINGER (also u/s FLOOR MANAGER, TERRORIST, CONTINUITY ANNOUNCER): Male, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Polite and efficient, earnest and eager to impress.
SHEILA (also u/s DIANA) Female, 20s to early 30s, any ethnicity. A production assis-tant, young and good-looking. A sure pair of hands, used to the pressure of running the show, as well as the attentions of her male co-workers.
DIRECTOR (also u/s HOWARD BEALE) Male, 40s/50s, any ethnicity. A little worn out by years on the show, so perhaps a little rough around the edges, but still very skilled at his job.
FLOOR MANAGER (also u/s SCHLESINGER) Male or female, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Should feel serious and capable of running a studio floor, strident when in charge but perhaps a little wet behind the ears.
SECRETARY (also u/s SHEILA) Female, 20s, any ethnicity. An efficient researcher.
TERRORIST Male, young, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Clean cut, well groomed, handsome, athletic, capable of adrenalized intensity, at the end of the play, without any lines.
CONTINUITY ANNOUNCER (also u/s JENSEN, CHANEY, RUDDY) Male 40s/50s, any ethnicity. A very silky television voice. One of the old guard.
TECHNICIAN (also u/s LOUISE) Female, 50s to early 60s, any ethnicity. Good at her job, strong and stoic.
TECHNICIAN (also u/s MAX) Male 50s to early 60s, any ethnicity. Manly, hand-some, capable, an old hand in the studio.
TECHNICIAN (also u/s HARRY HUNTER, SNOWDEN) Male, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Young and eager. Maybe with a bit of swagger, possibly funny.
TECHNICIAN (also u/s DIRECTOR, SECRETARY) Male or female, 20s-40s, any eth-nicity. Serious and efficient, possibly with a bit of attitude.
CAMERA OPERATOR 1 – Male or female, any ethnicity. Not too tall in height or big in build, but capable of maneuvering the camera equipment confidently. Good movement and co-ordination. Any previous camera experience a plus.
CAMERA OPERATOR 2 – Male or female, any ethnicity. Not too tall in height or big in build, but capable of maneuvering the camera equipment confidently. Good movement and co-ordination. Any previous camera experience a plus.
