In 1955, in the redwood country north of San Francisco, a multiracial girl grows up in a predominantly white town whose residents pepper their speech with the historical dialect of Boontling. Found floating in a basket on the river as an infant, Bulrusher is an orphan with a gift for clairvoyance that makes her feel like a stranger even around those who think they know her best: the taciturn schoolteacher who adopted her, the madam who runs her brothel with a fierce discipline, the logger with a zest for horses and women, and the guitar-slinging boy who is after Bulrusher's heart. Just when she thought her world might close in on her, she discovers an entirely new sense of self when a Black girl from Alabama comes to town.
Descriptions speak to the characters as written and should not discourage actors who are comfortable playing the gender or age described from submitting.
Bulrusher. She/Her. Biracial, Black-presenting. 18. A poet, storyteller, and burgeoning entrepreneur with a special gift. Orphaned at birth. Found on the river as a baby and raised by the local school teacher. Curious, headstrong, independent, generous, but naïve to the world outside of her hometown where she is singular. There is no one like her. Note: This character appears onstage semi nude.
Madame. She/Her. Native American. Pomo but passing for white in this community. 40s. Confident and commanding. Proprietor of the local brothel, a dutiful guardian of her employees. Eager to sell her business and leave Boonville, but conflicted about abandoning the relationships she has made with her clientele and Bulrusher. A keeper of secrets.
Logger. He/Him. Black. 46. Sings. Laidback and a smooth talker, but conflicted in love. A regular and unabashed patron of Madame's brothel, previously a consistent client of Madame herself. Persistent in his pursuit of Madame romantically, but wavers in his commitment to a serious future together. Discovered Bulrusher on the river as a baby. Vera’s Uncle. Originally from Alabama but has made a home here in Boonville. Did not finish school but is a lover of poetry and knowledge.
Schoolch. He/Him. White. 40s. School teacher in Boonville who rarely speaks outside of the classroom. When he speaks, people take notice. Raised Bulrusher in his home but at an arm’s distance. Romantically interested in Madame and hangs around her brothel, but not one of her clients. A man of very few words but a good dancer.
Boy. He/Him. White. 18. Overly-confident, mouthy, and flirtatious; he’s used to getting what he wants. Has taken a recent romantic interest in Bulrusher and is sure that interest is requited, despite actions suggesting otherwise. Wants to know what to do to win her heart. Sings and plays guitar in scenes. Reads music and sings.
Vera. She/Her. Black. 18. Strong and knowledgeable but seeking escape from her circumstances. From Birmingham, Alabama and traveled to Boonville to reconnect with her uncle. Trained as a typist and plans to attend college and become a teacher. Scarred by trauma back home. Was raised in segregated and racist USA that makes her cautious of the Boonville community. Sings. Note: This character appears onstage semi nude.

Any ethnicity for all roles. Please include actors of all abilities and gender identities for all roles.
Ebenezer Scrooge: Male Presenting. (50s+) Stoic, guarded, distrustful; the anti-Santa Clause, all hard edges and frosty insides. Scrooge repels all those around him, not with shouting or hysterics, but simply in the coldness he exudes. This coldness and distrust of the world is born from the abandonment and loneliness he suffered as a child, and the fears of heartbreak and poverty that plague him still. Over the course of his fantastical journey, the layers of self-protection, anger and coldness are melted away to reveal a joyful, warm, childlike and eager individual.
Old Jo: Any Gender Presentation. (50s+) This role is cast. Kind-hearted and scrappy, a kind of anti Scrooge. Runs a blackmart goods ‘business,’ re-selling any and everything. Always a good time; tries to hide their soft heart with a fast-talking exterior. Good with comedy, but still grounded.
Bob Cratchit: Male Presenting. (40s-50s) This role is cast. Scrooge’s clerk. A family man of kindness and compassion, good humor and inerasable good spirits. A hard worker, devoted to his family and has compassion for his fellow humans, cares about his community. Puts up with a lot, but is always positive/optimistic.
Margaret Cratchit: Female Presenting. (40s-50s) The realist to Bob’s optimist. A fighter, fiercely intelligent, loving and warm, protective over Bob and their children; A writer and homemaker. She shares her husband Bob’s kind disposition but is quicker to anger. She sees more clearly the injustice in the world and does not suffer fools.
Christmas Past: Any Gender Presentation. Any age; This role is cast. A ghost and the most angelic of the four spirits we meet. Welcoming and warm, as well as tough and investigative. Good movement and vocal skills, especially a range of voice effects, which can stop Scrooge in his tracks.
Christmas Present: Any Gender Presentation. (40s+) This role is cast. A spirit of immense jolliness and good spirit, such that it overflows from them. The incarnate of Christmas fun, with a talent for taking Scrooge to task when need be and is not afraid of confronting the darker side of things.
Christmas Yet to Come: Male Presenting. (mid 40s+) This role is cast. A phantom; unspeaking and ominous presence with physical range and acuity. This role is cast.
Jacob Marley: Male Presenting. (30s) This role is cast. Scrooge’s deceased business partner. Shrewd, intelligent in business but not so much in human relationships; strident in his youth, repentant in his ghostly return. A hard-nosed businessman. Harsh, cold; found a kindred spirit in Scrooge, both of them injured by the world and afraid of it. We see Marley at the age of his apprenticeship and as his ghostly, older self.
Fred: Male Presenting. (20s-40) Scrooge’s nephew. Hearty and caring, exuding joy and good will wherever he goes. Admired by the people of London. Recently married and very much in love. Throws a great party and is beloved by children. The beloved only son of Fan, who died birthing him. Uncle Scrooge can barely stand to look at him, so deep is the pain of the loss of his sister.
Caroline: Female Presenting. (20s-40) A big heart and a great wit. Recently married to Fred and very much in love. Feels the joy of the season, and shares it with all around her. Loves a good joke and a good party. While respectful of Scrooge, she is not afraid to stand up to him.
Mrs. Dilber: Female Presenting. Any age; This role is cast. Scrooge’s maid; she has a bit of an Amelia Bedelia vibe. Believes in ghosts, easily spooked, not great at gruel-making, but has a kind heart, an even temper and an obliviousness to Scrooge’s gruffer qualities. Happily employed by Scrooge for some time without much complaint.
Belle: Female Presenting. (20s-40) This role is cast. An optimist with clear values and a vision for her future. Not afraid of a challenge, has a positive outlook, beloved by the young & old. Comes from a large family, and earns her own money in an apprenticeship in clothing manufacturing. A friend to the Fezziwig family; she lives with and is close to her own family. Scrooge’s finance, then ex.
Carol the Caroler: Any Gender Presentation. Any age. This role is cast.
