[BUDDY HOLLY] 18-32, famed singer-songwriter and star from Lubbock, Texas. Buddy is charismatic, with a strong desire to create his own very specific style of music. Plays guitar (both acoustic and electric) and is onstage for nearly every scene. Two major concerts included.
[JOE B. MAULDIN] (and others) - 18-35, Double bass player from Lubbock, Texas. Great upright bass ability and strong stage presence. Additional instruments a strong plus.
[JERRY ALLISON] (and others) 18 to 35 years old; any ethnicity; man. Drummer from Lubbock, Texas. Fun, young adult who is a killer drummer. Comedy skills. Additional instruments a strong plus.
[RITCHIE VALENS] (and others) Latino/Hispanic, 18-29, strong singer with swagger. Dance ability / movement. His key song is “La Bamba.” Ability to play a musical instrument a plus.
[THE BIG BOPPER] (and others) 23-45. Larger than-life character with the ability to command the stage on his own. His key song is “Chantilly Lace.” Ability to play a musical instrument a plus. Plays guitar.
[HIPOCKETS DUNCAN] (and others) – 30–50. DJ at influential radio station and Buddy Holly mentor. Very strong musician. Multi-instrumentalists encouraged. Storyteller.
[MARLENA] (and others) 24-50, Great Black singer with great comic timing. Ability to hold the stage on her own. Ability to play a musical instrument is a strong advantage, but not imperative.
[TYRONE] (and others) 24-50, great Black singer with comic timing. Ability to play a musical instrument is a strong plus.
[NIKKI SULLIVAN] - (and others) Very strong electric guitarist and musician. Ringer singer musician who joins the crickets in their journey to fame. May understudy Buddy Holly. Good stage presence. Multiple instruments a plus.
[NORM PETTY] (and others) – 30–50. Co-Owner of recording studio in New Mexico. A bit like a high school principal, but kind, firm, and terribly innovative. Strong stage presence, multi-instrumentalist or horn player with & good vocal harmonies.
[VI PETTY] (and others) 26-45, Norman Petty’s wife, has a heart of gold. Exceptional rock ‘n’ roll piano ability and quick with a humorous one-liner. Strong stage presence & vocal harmony.
[MARIA ELENA] (and others) Latino / Hispanic, 18-26. Smart, beautiful with strong singing & harmony skills. Ability to play any instrument is a strong plus.
[MURRAY DEUTCH] (and others) 25-55. Charismatic comedian with strong stage presence and excellent timing. Ability to play an instrument is a strong plus. Has basic dance moves and strong harmony skills.
[PEGGY SUE] (and others) 18-30, Smart with great comic timing, strong singing ability with harmony skills and moderate dance. Ability to play any instrument is a strong plus.
[MULTIPLE ENSEMBLE FEATURES] 18-50, Male & Female triple threats who are good comics. Strong harmony skills, great pitch, sharp dancing necessary. Instruments are a MUST.
[VIOLET NEWSTEAD] (30s – late 40s): Attractive, strong, and ambitious woman who is willing to stand up for what she believes in. She is the efficient head secretary of Consolidated Industries and Mr. Hart’s administrative assistant. She ends up becoming the CEO of the company. She is also a single mother of a teenager. Has strong ironic comic sense. Broadway belter.
[DORALEE RHODES] - (late 20s – mid 30s): Sexy in a wholesome way, while also incredibly kind and caring. Has the kind of figure that stops traffic. Originally played by Dolly Parton in the film, but definitely not looking for an impersonation. A country-style belter.
[JUDY BERNLY] - (mid 30s): She is the “new” girl. Insecure and afraid of being on her own at first, but later becomes empowered, blossoming into strong, attractive woman. Her husband just left her for his secretary. A power belter.
[ROZ] (late 30s – early 40s): The office kiss-up, gossip, and second to the boss. She has an unrequited love for Hart, and will do anything to win his approval. Character lady, comedienne.
[FRANKLIN HART, JR.] (mid 40s – early 50s): The boss, President of Consolidated Industries. Arrogant, self-absorbed, male chauvinist. He is capable of a smarmy charm when he needs it. Strong baritone.
[ENSEMBLE] STRONG SINGER/DANCERS - Will play various roles including those listed below:
[MISSY] (mid – late 30s): Hart’s wife. Fluttery and ditzy, she is oblivious to her husband’s unfaithfulness.
[MARGARET] (40s – early 50s): Another secretary at Consolidated Industries and the office lush. Covers the role of Violet. A superb comic. Attractive character lady.
[JOE] (mid 20s – early 30s): The cute, young, charming office accountant. He’s smitten with Violet.
[DICK] (late 30s – mid 40s): Judy’s soon-to-be ex-husband. Average middle-aged guy. He cheated on Judy with his secretary.
[DWAYNE] (late 20s – early 30s): Doralee’s very supportive husband. A good Southern gentleman. Has genuine charm and sex appeal.
[JOSH] (18+ to play a teenager): Violet’s teenage son.
[TINSWORHTY] (mid 40s – early 50s): CEO of Consolidated Industries. Strong, smart and perceptive. Has the commanding presence and bearing of an Army general.
[NICK] 30 to 40s male. A writer. Nigel’s older brother. He holds a grudge against Shakespeare. A great comic that sings and dances very well. Tenor (B2-A4)
[NIGEL] 30 to early 40s male. A writer. Nick’s younger brother. Sweet and a little awkward. He is in love with Portia. A great comic that sings very well. Tenor solid to G#4
[WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE] 30-40s Male. Over the top, cocky, a true rock star of his time. He is the renaissance James Brown. A great comic that sings and dances very well. Rock tenor solid to A4
[THOMAS NOSTRADAMUS] 40 to 50 years old; any ethnicity; male. A soothsayer. He predicts that Nick and Nigel will write a musical. A great comic that sings and dances very well. Tenor 2 (C3-F4)
[BROTHER JEREMIAH] 40 to 50 years old; any ethnicity; male. A Puritan. The father of Portia. He despises Nick and Nigel. A great comic that sings very well. Rock Baritone solid to G4
[MINSTREL] 25 to 35 years old; any ethnicity; male. Is the fun-loving charismatic narrator of the show, sings the opening numbers of each act, sings and dances well. Tenor solid to A4
[BEA] 30’s Female. Nigel’s wife. She loves Nigel despite his past lack of success. She dresses up like a man to prove she can be an actor. A great comic that sings very well. Mezzo with belt (D3-D5)
[PORTIA] 20’s-30’s Female. A beautiful puritan woman that Nick meets on the street. She has golden hair and loves poetry. A great comic that sings very well. Soprano with a mix (G3-F5)
[SHYLOCK] 50 to 60 years old. An older Jewish man. Nick and Nigel are in debt to him. He becomes an investor in their musical. A great comic that sings well.
[LORD CLAPHAM] 50 to 60 years old. Older male. Patron of the theatre. He’s flamboyant and extremely posh. A great comic that sings well.
[ENSEMBLE] 20 to 40 years old; any ethnicity; any gender. Various ages / ethnicities / character types. All sing and dance – tap and musical theatre styles. Wonderful comedic timing.
