Breakdown
Play Description - T. S. Eliot's verse dramatization of the murder of Thomas Becket at Canterbury, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. This gripping drama portrays the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. Becket struggles with four tempters, each with posing a different challenge. Praised for its poetically masterful handling of issues of faith, politics, and the common good, T. S. Eliot's play bolstered his reputation as the most significant poet of his time.
Male Roles
Thomas Becket
(age range 35-55) Spiritual leader, strong, bright, with a soul searching for truth
Priests 1, 2, 3
(age range 25-55) All speaking with Becket of his life and work, challenging, probing.
Tempters and Knights 1, 2, 3, and 4
(age range 25-55) - Four men. Varying from wicked to noble these spirits pursue Becket with temptation. Knights and tempters played by the same actors. Knights- Noble, practical, of this earth.
Female Roles –
Chorus
Four female parts, speaking in unison, the voice of the play. Aching, yearning, searching, tied to the earth but seeking spiritual answers.
