Breakdown
Set in Ethiopia and New York, MOURNING SUN is a new play by Antu Yacob that explores how we transcend sometimes-brutal traditions and find our way to connection and hope. This remarkable love story spans continents and cultures, and celebrates the possibility of finding a true home.
CASTING:
Biftu Kebede:
Ethiopian, half Oromo, half Amhara, beautiful, smart, mature for her age, wanting of a world outside, plays kirar perfectly, a child bride with fistula, experiences transformational journey.(Adult actor who can play teens)
Mawardi Kebede/Kayleen:
Mawardi: Biftu’s younger sister, perky, wisecracking, fights to have her voice heard. (Adult actor who can play teens) Kayleen: trendy, came from the Bahamas at an early age, insecure, struggles with drug use, a singer, college student.
Abdi Dawid:
Ethiopian, half Oromo, half Amhara, a dreamer, charismatic, confident, smitten with Biftu, an impeccable dancer, has difficulty with change. (Adult actor who can play teens)
Emaye/Miriam:
Emaye: Amhara, Biftu & Mawardi’s mother, extremely traditional, hard worker, survivor, Miriam: Abdi’s aunt, adopted by Americans in her teens, independent thinker, femininist, a cultural fusion, married to Ken, early-mid 40’s for both characters.
Get’oum/Driver 1-3/Dr. Melaku:
Get’oum: Amhara, spoiled child of the wealthiest man in the community, slightly awkward, a puppet. Dr. Melaku: sympathetic, works at the Fistula Clinic, wants to create a better space for his people, early 20s for both characters. (Drivers can range in age).
Worku/Ken Thomas:
Worku: wealthiest man in the Bahr Dahr village community, aloof, father to Get’oum. Ken: African-American, an African American studies professor, has difficulty in connecting with Abdi, married to Miriam, 40’s for both characters.
