Seeking:
SISTER ROSETTA THARPE (Understudy)
Role is CAST. Seeking Understudy. An African-American woman in her early 30’s. Pretty, vivacious, an irrepressible spirit. A mean guitar player with a bluesy voice. Plays spirituals that swing. Tharpe was a legend in her time, bringing fierce guitar playing and swing to gospel music. Tharpe was the queen of ‘race records’ in the 30’s and 40’s, who performed mornings at churches and evenings at the Cotton Club, who was a big enough star to fill a baseball stadium for her third wedding, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a huge influence on Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Jimi Hendrix.
MARIE KNIGHT
An African-American woman in her early 20’s, but looks younger. A more traditional alto gospel singer, plays staid piano. Gorgeous, on her way to being a spiritual star. Was Sister Rosetta’s young protege.

The Agitators tells the story of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass’ long friendship. Young abolitionists when they met in 1849, they were full of hopes, dreams and a joint purpose. Great allies and at times, great adversaries. Throughout their 45-year friendship, they agitated the nation, they agitated each other and, in doing so, they helped shape the Constitution and the course of American history.
Seeking:
SUSAN B. ANTHONY
A Caucasian female, mid 30’s- early 40’s. Starts as an underpaid school teacher and ends up a social reformer and women’s rights activist. Susan is strong and resilient with a quick mind and tongue. She possesses incredible inner strength. A sturdy and grounded woman, she is able to emotionally and physically withstand the challenges of being on the road for months at a time. She is unapologetic and commits her life to the women’s suffrage movement. As she is married to the cause she never enters into a marriage. Requires an experienced actress of extreme charisma who is able to carry a play.
FREDERICK DOUGLASS
An African-American male, mid 30’s- early 40’s. A refined and elegant man, who is extremely charismatic and a powerful public speaker. Frederick is a courageous and brilliant academic, author, and abolitionist. An excellent father and husband, he struggles to find the balance between being an activist for his cause, always on the road, while still being present for his family. He is strong yet unmasked in his vulnerability. He is a self taught violinist. Actors who play violin are helpful, but not necessary. Requires an experienced actor of extreme charisma who is able to carry a play.

EINAT / TALIA / DAREEN
30-45, Israeli actress and author; warm and engaging with an iron will. One of the roles she describes playing (and then performs) is that of a woman who moves back to Israel after a long absence. Remorseful. Was in a committed relationship with Samer, but thought he was Jewish. She is guilty for having falsely accused “Him” of rape after learning he was actually Palestinian; now seeks to make amends.
MORAD / SAMER
30-45, Palestinian actor and director; stoic and tautly wound; an Arab living in Israel. One of the roles he describes working with is that of a Palestinian prisoner accused of being a terrorist; along with another prisoner, Samer, released from prison; a man with a facade of being put together, but one who bears suppressed anguish over what was done to him. He was in a relationship with Talia even as he lied about being Jewish. After Talia found out and went to the police, Samer was imprisoned when Talia told authorities and the court that Samer had raped her. He’s been living with a new identity ever since.

Synopsis: When teenage daughter Lexie helps her reluctant single mother, Nora, re-enter the dating scene, an unlikely suitor emerges in Griff – the guy at the coffee shop who inadvertently witnesses Nora’s string of unsuccessful dates. As choices collide with coincidences and longing mixes with reality, each character must face the complications that always arise in the search for intimacy and the closeness of family. This captivating new play with a metaphysical twist navigates the paths of romance, marriage and parenting while exploring the pains and pleasures of all three.

NORA
Female, 40-50, any ethnicity. The mother to teenage Lexie. Frazzled, anxious, feminist, not good at dating. Overwhelmed and unable to deal with Lexie as a troubled teen. She has a good sense of humor, comic timing and a good deal of charm.
GRIFF
Male, 40-50, any ethnicity. Nora’s husband and Lexie’s father. Down to earth, loving, funny with a good sense of humor, comic timing and a good deal of charm.
LEXIE
Female, 18+, any ethnicity to play 14-18. Teenage daughter of Nora. In Act One, is extremely nurturing and loving towards her mother, wanting desperately for her to be happy. In Act Two, a belligerent teenager who lashes out at her mother after her father’s death. She is smart, poetics, with a good sense of humor, comic timing and a good deal of charm.
