Breakdown
SHOW DESCRIPTION: Luis Alfaro, author of the explosive Oedipus el Rey, continues his brilliant reexamination of the Greek classics through a modern lens: Mojada is a breathtaking reimagining of Euripides’ Medea transported to East Los Angeles. Medea, a Mexican seamstress with extraordinary skill, is running from a past filled with betrayals. With husband Jason and their son in tow, old and new worlds collide in the City of the Angels. SEEKING:
Medea: Female (20 – 30, Mexican-American). Immigrant from Mexico, Undocumented, seemingly shy, damaged, agoraphobic and holding secrets of abuse from a rough crossing as well has some violent history from her past in Mexico, she has a true, all-consuming passion for her husband, and a naïve belief about the power of their love that is slowly disabused over the course of the play. She has a latent sensuality that is present even when she’s fearful, a burgeoning strength, and a beast within finally stirred as the circumstances of her new world order are revealed to her. Needs to be able to speak Spanish. (This role has been cast, looking for an understudy.)
Jason: Male (25-35, Mexican-American). Immigrant from Mexico, Undocumented, passionate, gregarious, determined to get ahead in the new world, no matter what the cost, a man who both loves his wife and child, but has aspirations of survival and advancement in the new world that he desperately wants to be a part of that mean he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it, including make love to another woman. His son is his beloved everything. Needs to be able to speak Spanish. (This role has been cast, looking for an understudy.)
Tita: Female (50 -65, Mexican-American) Immigrant from Mexico, Undocumented, a family nurse from the old country loyal to the core, a woman wise and watchful, with some healing powers, salty in humor, a visionary raconteur, with great deal of abiding love for the family, even as all the dark corners of their story are revealed to her. Needs to be able to speak Spanish.
Josefina: Female (28 – 40, Mexican-American). Immigrant from Mexico, Undocumented, a chatterbox, a gossip, a good-hearted woman who sells pan dulce and yearns for her husband to make her pregnant. She’s learned the ways of the new world and how to survive, but she still has a longing for the old country and really just wants friends and family. Needs to be able to speak Spanish.
Armida: Female (40 – 50, Mexican-American). Immigrant from Mexico, A power player in the new world, who has conquered the world by being ruthless, pragmatic, and charming when she needs to be. She’s conquered this town, and she makes the rules, so she’s tough and accustomed to getting what she wants. She has plans for both the continued growth of her empire, and how to form her new ideal family. Needs to be able to speak Spanish.
Acan: Male (a child to read 10-years-old, Mexican-American) Immigrant from Mexico, Undocumented, young, eager for new adventures, fascinated by all the electronic gadgets and toys of the new world and what this new country can offer him. He loves his parents, wants to be obedient to them, but is also excited about making his way in the new world, and making friends with all the new people who make his life better. Needs to be able to speak Spanish
