BREAKDOWN

MATT PARK IS PEER GYNT WITH THE NORWEGIAN HAPA BAND centers on Peer, a brash young man on a journey to discover his ultimate self in this rock music odyssey about risk, reinvention and going roundabout. Ma-Yi Theater Company’s remaking of Ibsen’s classic verse drama asks what it means when we sacrifice everything to be most fully ourselves.

PEER:
30s-40s, Asian-American, male-identified. Strong singer who plays electric guitar at a professional level. Quirky, brash, with rock-star charisma -- a charmer and a seeker. Character ages from 16 to late 60s over course of play.

OSE:
50s-60s, Asian-American, female-identified. Confident singer who plays keyboard/piano. A working-class mother who raised her off-beat son on her own. She is feisty and a fighter -- she knows who she is.

INGRID/THE LADY IN GREEN:
20s-40s, person of color, female-identified. Strong singer who plays a string instrument at a professional level; multi-instrumentalists encouraged; actors with movement training encouraged

  • Ingrid is a young (and then much older) woman from the town's only well-to-do family. She is desperate for approval but also knows how to stand her ground.
  • The Lady in Green is a mysterious, seductive and other-worldly woman.

SOLVAY:
20s-40s, person of color, female-identified. Strong singer who plays acoustic guitar, a wind instrument, or both. A fresh, independent woman who feels most at home alone in the mountains. She is a little reserved, extremely observant, and deeply kind. Character ages from 15 to late 60s over course of play.

JON/ANITRA/HELGA:
late 20s-40s, person of color, any gender. Confident singer who plays electric bass at a professional level. Transgender and gender nonconforming actors encouraged; actors with movement training encouraged. This is a role for an extremely versatile actor whose range can include a sassy 7 year old (HELGA), a club performer and dominatrix (ANITRA), and a menacing smuggler (JON).

MADS/BEGRIFFENFELDT

30s-40s, any ethnicity, male identified. Confident singer who plays drums and percussion at a professional level. The actor should have enough range to play a rough-edged town bully and also a highly verbal and intellectual asylum director.

THE BANDLEADER/TROLL KING

30s-40s, any ethnicity, any gender: Strong singer who plays guitar, keyboard, and other instruments at a professional level and can lead a musical ensemble while playing. A charismatic figure with a dark edge.
