BREAKDOWN

MARIA CALLAS: [CAST] Maria Callas, 45-55, arguably the most celebrated opera diva of her time. She is grand, has deep feeling, passion, pride, has total dedication to her art, she has suffered greatly and believes this is the key to capturing the tragic emotions of the characters whose roles she sings. Her teaching style is honest, direct, and blunt.

FIRST SOPRANO (SOPHIE): Female, 22-30. Opera Student. A strong operatic soprano and actress; sees herself as fiery but is soon overwhelmed and intimidated by Maria's criticism; must sing Bellini’s Sonnambila aria, Ah non credea mirati.

SECOND SOPRANO (SHARON): Female, 22-30. A strong operatic soprano and actress; sensitive, but courageous; not afraid to ask questions; works very hard; feisty enough to stand up and talk back to Callas, but eventually breaks down, sings Verdi’s Macbetto, Lady Macbeth’s letter aria, Vieni! Taffretta
